Update: We're leaving in a couple weeks, bigger dog is within weight and size limit for in-cabin; I think he would have a heart attack in baggage area; unfortunately, have to fly out of Kona in order to have non-stop with them in-cabin with us. Fingers crossed all works out. Spending remaining weeks getting puppers used to getting into the carriers. The carriers are soft body and smoosh down to fit under airline seat; otherwise, doggies can stand up. Soft carriers don't have the rules for space above head that the hard kennel-type carriers do.

Our problem is Hawaiian requires 16" max length of carrier, shortest length of ANY airline I've found, and one dog is 17" long. We're going to try 18" carrier and hope for some aloha.
