Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
Substantive action ... but not by the government.

A service suspension into a high outbreak area is wise, but did company officials base their decision on:
* safeguarding the health of passengers & crew
* the prevention of international dissemination of the COVID-19 virus
* empty planes with no passengers

“We believe a temporary service suspension is prudent given the escalation of COVID-19 in South Korea and the impact the illness has had on demand for leisure travel from that country,”

In lieu of the coverage of the Flight Att. on Korean Air now testing positive (her route Korea, Lax, Israel),
seems like a prudent move. Flight Att.'s union might have had a hand in this .

Out of Japan, some scary news today
.
"Woman treated for coronavirus again tests positive.

The woman was discharged from a local medical institution on February 1, and was confirmed as virus-free on February 6.

But on February 19, she felt throat and chest pain. After several visits to the doctor, she was tested a week later and tested positive again.

The woman reportedly wore a mask and stayed at home after leaving the medical institution.

She did not go to work, and had no close contact with anyone. She is now hospitalized in the prefecture.

Prefectural officials believe that either viruses that remained in the woman multiplied, or the woman was re-infected "

”money” works both ways

And speaking of money, when Health & Human Services Secretary Alex Azar was asked today about progress on a COVID-19 vaccine, and its cost to Americans:

“We would want to ensure that we work to make it affordable,” Azar said. “But we can’t control that price

Perhaps the department should change its name to Health Services For Wealthy Humans?

Only three US states can test for coronavirus, says public lab group

From: https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/02/21/only...group.html

KEY POINTS
• California, Nebraska and Illinois are the only U.S. states that can currently test for coronavirus, the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) told Reuters on Friday.

• The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week said some of the testing kits sent to U.S. states and at least 30 countries produced "inconclusive" results due to a flawed component.

• The CDC planned to send replacement materials to make the kits work.

It's up to five states now that have approved labs to perform COVID-19 tests and California is one of them. Have to say the timing of that announcement of possible community-transmission to align with the President's press briefing was rather opportune?

Currently, only 12 labs outside of the CDC—located in California, Illinois, Nebraska, Nevada, and Tennessee—have the capability to test for the virus. Peter Kyriacopoulos, the chief policy officer for APHL, told CIDRAP News the testing process could be dramatically shortened and expanded if 100 Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL)-member labs receive authorization to do their own tests.

But don't need to worry - Pence is now on the case! He did help with (enabling and prolonging) a HIV-related outbreak during his time as governor in Indiana, so that's related experience right?

Governor Ige has plans as well - these “enhanced communication strategies” sound like the best pamphlets ever! (once the state shows him the money of course)

ETA: UC Davis confirms that the patient was transferred to them LAST Wednesday 2/19 and was already on a ventilator at that time and the CDC still refused to test him until Sunday. So it's been on the loose in Northern California for at least the last 2-3 weeks likely IMHO.

“If widespread community transmission is established, there should then be consideration of transition to include mitigation activities”

I read this as "reacting to the outbreak after it happens"...?

Ige’s request includes $800,000 for a multi-media communication campaign, and $200,000 for quarantine and “self-monitoring” to include people who are not residents of the state or may people who “not have a viable home situation,” according to Ige’s message.

Another $1.3 million would be earmarked for laboratory testing, and $2.5 million will be set aside for disease outbreak surveillance and response, according to the message.

And $1.18 million would be earmarked for the DOD emergency response, including money for forehead and ear thermometers and personal protective equipment for responders, according to the message.

Hawaii isn't "authorized" by CDC, so what are the lab tests for?

Why am I even bothering with stupid questions anymore?

If this keeps up, a statewide pandemic might cost as much as 50 protestors camped on Mauna Kea Access Road. What if Harry & Ige were to talk with the virus, see what it wants? It’s communicable, which is more than can be said for the outbreak of no-compromise protestors opening lawn chairs, never to be folded up again.
