Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
Heard an epidemiologist on a podcast today. Young folks are surviving, but after terrible pneumonia and in some cases ICU interventions. Don't let the numbers fool you into thinking it's always mild for folks under 60.

Also heard a popular local food-serving business refused to let a sick employee go home early today. That employee later went to the ER with flu-like symptoms. Wonder what will happen to that business if employees and customers contract covid19 now...

Experts are recommending social distancing and cancelling of school and events now to delay transmission and "flatten the curve" of people needing ICU beds and respirators. This is even more critical for us on the big island. Anyone ask HMC how many respirators they have? The mayor won't let us go look at lava, but children are still forced together in schools during a pandemic?

With spring break around the corner, most schools are just trying to make it through the rest of the week, although there are some that hwve cancelled field trips and after school events.

There was an interesting bit of tension at the press conference yesterday as the reporters were pressing about whether the amount of testing available was sufficient to identify community spread of the virus. Sarah Park, state epidemiologist, pushed back saying even if you do test positive for COVID-19 the treatment is the same for flu - home, rest, liquids, monitor symptoms, and keep in contact with your doctor.

A positive COVID-19 test doesn't have the same consequences (hospital isolation) as when containment was the goal. If those positive individuals don't require hospital care, they are sent home, a clear sign that hospital resources are being prioritized for treatment of the worst cases and there is no preventing the spread of the virus anymore, just slowing it down.

Social distance now as much as you can.

If you purchase(d) airline flight cancellation insurance, it may not be covered in a pandemic. Which as of this morning, is now:

Perhaps Hawaii falls into abroad?

Abroad - it means whatever it needs to mean... Way to sneak that out in the middle of the night State Department.

Hawaii (Oahu) is wisely taking a page from South Korea's playbook - drive-through testing! Easy to setup, no need to infect everyone at the doctors, a demonstrated best practice. Much better than welding people into their apartments! (China, cough, cough)

"Perhaps Hawaii falls into abroad?"

I imagine, in a Gary Larson kinda way, the folks in Ige's office gleefully thinking that means we're going to get a bump in tourism.

Wow, drive through testing. I guess when uncle sam pays for the tests we can figure a way out to do as many tests as possible? Should have made em free In January.

To be fair, having Uncle pay for the test both promotes the public health and boosts the economy. And with the Fed printing money nonstop, it's all free right? Wink
