Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
People hand-wring about "losing faith in institutions", but if us armchair epidemiologists on Punaweb figured out masks=good weeks ago, what does that say about the clowns at the CDC, or the parrots at our DoH? It's no wonder so many of us decided to buck the system and live off-grid.

No man is an island, but maybe our island will come out of this a little more self-reliant and diversified? Nah, bring on the federal bailouts...

You will be censured by those who have moral superiority...and certainty about every form of reality that exists.

It's still a free country (for now) - you can say any cold, heartless, calculating dismissal of human suffering you want. But do you think you wouldn't/shouldn't be called out on it? It's not moral superiority, just basic morals.

As for other forms of reality, you'll have to unspool that one - suffice it to say I'm not betting my kids' life on the potential reward of spending eternity with the flying spaghetti monster Wink

Statistics. They suck. They don’t take into account human suffering....

Signs of water in this well? Or just don't want to post what a life is worth according the latest budgetary estimates?

Of course it is more cost effective to let people die (at least in the short term) - the choices involved stem from what you value more in life.

Raises glass. Government does does not always hire the most qualified. Those people are making more in the private sector. Nobody gets fired, they get promoted up in government jobs.

This is an interesting site with projections of the numbers affected by COVID-19 for the US and each of the states including Hawaii:

https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections

It suggests to me things won't start getting back to normal until sometime in late June/early July.

Great site, TomK. It will be interesting to see how these projections change as time goes on.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Hawaii Dept of health now has a heat map of infected areas.

^ How dare she wear a surgical mask in public? The inhumane monster stealing resources from medical personnel! (pre-programming for the public in action - expect the move to a new norm).

Hmm, now what to buy for the new fashion sense...

You made my point very well.

My religion has been a great comfort to me during this time of crisis.

I keep telling that to the 25 thousand people who starve to death every day, but that's only 9 million a year. But they don't listen. And we could easily buy our way out of that.

That's a perfect example. Beck is _almost_ as sanctimonious as Oliver, so there can't be any reasonable discourse. Plenty of faulty logic on both sides.

It's like an immediate game of "there are two kinds of people" or something. You appear to put me in the "ostrich" camp for some reason, and now I worship the market as a death cult, as a chaser to being cold and heartless.

What crime have I committed? It's like I am an actual straw man to you. Wink I social distance with the best of them (though you may be the best, I admit, especially if you would stick to one big box store instead of three Wink). I post that a trillion dollars is a LOT of money, that our individual chance of a positive outcome are very high, that other deaths don't seem to matter as much as corona deaths. I don't advocate anything that kills people, do I?

I am waiting for Italy (60,000,000 people) to peak, and New York Metro (10,000,000 people) to peak, for Big Island to start, so that it can eventually peak.

I guess you are good INTP/J and I am a bad INTP/J. It happens. Or maybe our love languages are out of sync...

many of those people without work, without means to pay for expenses are hurtling towards financial destruction.

Wow, look. Real reasons to consider whether capitalism is a failed system. Amazing, eh?

Here we have the great equalizer. We don't need no stickin' burn one for Bernie silly over the hill hippie telling us all about those social ills of our selfish I got mine screw you society. We have COVID-19. Oh the wonders.

Universal basic income, single payer healthcare, tuition free education... never mind.

Remember people, the only thing we really have is our humanity. Use it wisely.

consider whether capitalism is a failed system

Every economic system requires money or goods to flow from the producers to the rulers; chiefdoms, kingdoms, feudalism, capitalism, socialism, communism, even our Puna economic system of Disaster Recoveryism needs money to come from someplace other than Puna, and then Harry Kim to send it elsewhere rather than Puna. An excellent example of a failed system, even when its working.

If a population is bedridden (or worse) by a pandemic, no economic system will function properly.
