Inter island flights for medical reasons?
#1
I got an early birthday present this week. I'll be 67 in a month. Got me a hernia. Had an ultrasound yesterday, and  it's verified. Waiting to hear from a surgeon. Since I have Kaiser Permanente, I'm quite sure they'll be flying me to Oahu for the surgery. That's normally no big deal. Now, with the Covide19,  it's different. I was told there may be medical exemptions for this type of situation. Anyone deal with this recently? I was told by the technician that did the ultrasound that, more than likely, I'd not be kept overnight after the procedure. That sounds good to me, as my place has  a strong homing beacon to me.

Your only problem is your return as flying into Honolulu from the other islands has no quarantine. So worst case scenario is having to quarantine at home.

They may require that you get a Covid test prior to surgery, so the delay between testing and results could be an issue.

There's a quarantine exemption for essential travel such as medical appointments. You will need a note from your doctor, with dates.

Bird, I'm in the same boat. Got the hernia, got Kaiser, waiting till the end of the month to talk to the surgeon that only comes to the Kona Kaiser once a month. Maybe we'll be on the same plane to Oahu, I promise to stay six feet away. Last hernia surgery I went home that evening. Glad I did, the next day was very painful. Good luck!

Sorry to hear you and I have this in common. I didn't"t know the surgeon goes to Kona. Maybe I'll check into that. I was just told that they would schedule a phone consult or web consult with me. Did they do a mesh screen on your previous surgery, or?

Surgeon comes to Kona to talk but surgery is on Oahu. I had the mesh 25 years ago, no problems since. I'm going to send a message to surgeon and see if we can consult online, I don't want to drive to Kona.

I have a possible skin cancer & they offered a phone appt. What? So I questioned that & they said they always offer a phone appt b/c people don't want to come in. But in person appts are definitely available. I may be going to Oahu also.

@DoryGray: Kaiser has been erratic getting dermatologists to Hilo since Covid-19. I saw one here in June in person for a standard screening appointment that ended up being two months late due to the pandemic, and I had to keep calling to get that appointment. I also have a history of skin cancer (twice) and was told that I would have been seen right away if I had a suspicious growth. They did not, however, say if that would be in Hilo or elsewhere. Please post here and let us know how and where your situation was taken care of. Thanks.
