Oh Tom, you're better than that.

I'm sorry, I just find an anti-vaxxer posting "Mwah ha ha" is creepy. I really don't give a jot what your opinion is about my performance.

I'm sorry too. When we met in person I got an impression that I now understand was inaccurate.

It’s Mauna Kea.
There’s no backup plan. MADRID (AP) — A Spanish judge in a decision cheered by environmentalists* has put a halt to backup plans for the construction of a giant telescope in the Canary Islands — eliminating at least for now the primary alternative location to the preferred spot in Hawaii, where there have been protests against the telescope. https://www.yahoo.com/news/spain-judge-n...17601.html * and for people who know how to read poll results, also cheered by a majority of Hawaii residents

Here’s an article about the seven telescopes that changed how we view the cosmos. It includes Galileo’s telescope & Isaac Newton’s telescope. And the TMT.
Now the only limitation was how big you could make your mirror, leading to a new generation of telescopes dubbed Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) that will look deeper and with more precision than anything that has gone before. There are two ELTs currently in construction. The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will have a 30m-wide mirror and is being built on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea, with an expected first light in 2027. Elsewhere, the 39.3m-wide European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is being built in Chile, ready to start observing in 2025. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space...elescopes/

And the TMT. I expected a little better from the magazine when it comes to ELTs. It says two ELTs are being built - that is not true as obviously, the TMT is not currently being built. I'm not sure if it's confusion by the author or their information is old (the TMT will certainly not see first light in 2027 even if they restart construction tomorrow). The other ELT that is planned is the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) which, like the E-ELT, will be built in Chile with a primary mirror diameter of 24.5 meters, i.e., in the southern hemisphere, hence the need for an ELT in the northern hemisphere.

"The overall timeline for the project remains unclear."

I suggest there are still milestones: the next one is December 5, 2022, when Hawaii gets a new Governor.

I expected a little better
I’ll write my own completely accurate and fact checked article: Seven Projects* TMT Protestors Have Undertaken Since The Blockade Ended Which Have Improved The Well Being Of Native Hawaiian People & Mauna Kea’s Environment The End *Consider the possibilities, given the number of people, multiplied by the hours, days, weeks, months that protestors spent at Mauna Kea Access Road, testifying at the hearing, etc. |
