coconuts and avocados are easy to grow.

Mulberry can be made into tea, the leaves can be eaten in salads and the berries are tasty, too. Easy to grow from cuttings.

Most citrus grows well, some are seasonal, others seem to have a much longer fruiting season.

Food from trees is good since once they start producing they're usually fairly problem and maintenance free.

Mamaki and tea bushes. Moringa. Plant what you like to eat.

First question to ask and answer - what part of Puna are you talking about ? 

Kapoho/Kahena, with 60" inches of rain/year and plenty of sunshine ? 

Or Mt. View/Glenwood with 150"/year with cooler/cloudy conditions ?

As it is, your question is too vague for a serious answer.  Best advice is to talk to your neighbors to find out what has been tried, what thrives, what dies.  

Elevation and rainfall will be among the basic factors that determine the 'best' food plants that will grow where you are.

Punaperson is spot on. Mango will grow and flower in Mt. View, but no fruit. Success with citrus, starfruit (don''t plant more than one). We'll see with coconuts. Bananas of course. Onions, garlic and olena. If you're lucky you may get a huge bloom of mushrooms like Lepista tarda. We augment our pahoehoe with cinder and organics by the bag and compost everything we can. Love cardboard as it deters weeds as it breaks down.

Which nurseries sell the heartiest of seeds? Since we are about to purchase an old property in Pahoa, is it a wise idea to attempt to "cleanse" the soil by using plants that can gradually absorb the toxins in the ground? I believe the proper term is Phytoremediation.
