HAWAII, Hawaii (KHON2) — Big Island detectives have arrested and charged Kurtistown resident Spencer Kamuela Young Gun Chun, 40, on suspicion of intentionally hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle in the parking lot of a Pahoa shopping center.
The incident occurred on Jan. 25 shortly before 7 p.m. Officers were patrolling the nearby area when they noticed a traffic backup followed by two males engaged in an altercation.
Upon further investigation, officers concluded that a 39-year-old male was crossing the street to enter the shopping center, but Chun’s vehicle was in the man’s way, according to police. That is when the men exchanged gestures.
The 39-year-old continued to cross the street, and Chun allegedly turned his vehicle toward the victim and accelerated, striking the victim and knocking him to the ground.
The victim was transferred to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and later released. The entire incident was captured on surveillance footage and confirmed the investigation’s findings.
Chun was charged with Second-degree assault and Driving without a valid driver’s license on the morning of Jan. 27.
