I hesitate to post this, so if it turns into argumentative nonsense I’ll delete the thread. Now I realize some may intentionally post argumentative nonsense or purposely flaunt forum rules in order to try and get rid of the thread, but for those who want to continue to comment intelligently- - just don’t take the bait. Ignore the trolls if they appear.
The approval rating for the president in Hawaii stands at the lowest for any state, 19%.
First, why? Is it program cuts? Are we more affected than others? Or are we far enough away that we feel safe from retribution?
Second, the what. Are we safe from retribution? What if we’re impacted by a hurricane? Or lava? Or more flooding? Will FEMA function? Can we count on federal assistance in a timely manner?
The president received 37% of the vote in Hawaii in 2024, so 19% approval is pretty grim. Does it indicate a change of heart among voters here?
Please post responsibly.

Sorry for the ginormous link...I'm not savvy about that sorta-sorta:
Do Trump Budget Cuts Signal A New Challenge For Native Hawaiians?

Maybe this is part of the reason?

Agreed Ms. Ferret. I also think the Kona coffee farms raids took something abstract and made it all too real.

What I find interesting is that as HOTPE states, Trump garnered 37% of the vote in Hawaii, however according to the link HOTPE provided, Trump's approval rating was at 28% on inauguration day, a drop of 9%, assuming that the 37% who did vote for Trump approved of what Trump's campaign promises were to be. So, what happened from election day to inauguration day?
But then as of now, his approval is at 19% - another 9% drop from inauguration day. That being said, I don't know if it's fair to say the 37% who voted for Trump and the 28% approval on inauguration day is a fair measurement. Was the initial 9% difference voters who said, "screw Biden" over Kamala versus "Trump's my guy?" Or was it a real 9% drop from November to January?
As for my personal opinion of the tanked approval ratings being primarily due to people who voted for Trump becoming sick and tired of the constant and endless chaos being created day in and day out, I can only speculate any other reasons as to why, but in keeping with the request of the OP, I'll just say "all of the above."
Can we ever go back to a tan suit?

In your quest for understanding, perhaps you should educate yourself that a vote is different from an "approval rating poll", conducted by whomever. Very different. Once you apprehend this knowledge, you won't ask "what happened?"

Agree.
...you won't ask "what happened?"
Disagree. The question asked is still quite valid. Why did the net approval rating go from 28% on Day 1 to now 19% - a full 9% drop?
Perhaps you could educate us?

Yes, that’s true.
It’s also true that approval ratings as well as the vote percentage have dropped from January 2025 through May 2026 in Hawaii and everywhere. The exact numbers aren’t necessary to describe what has occurred and the questions are still applicable.
Have the approval ratings dropped because there is a vast disconnect between what voters and or the general public thought they were promised and what is actually happening? When I read interviews with the man or woman on the street, that does seem to be the case. For myself, if the worst of the worst who are undocumented are found guilty of their crimes and deported, following the law for deportation procedures, OK. But if a coffee picker got a speeding ticket so has to live in fear, or teachers are herded like cattle on Maui, or teenagers are subjected to the Spanish Inquisition at Customs in Honolulu, and masked government employed gunman face no consequences for actions when illegal, that’s not OK.
Who exactly is breaking the law?
Is Hawaii safer than it was a year ago? I’m sure one case of some terrible thing can be uncovered to prove a point, but in general, is Hawaii better, safer? Or are we just more disappointed and dissatisfied?
like making the tax on capital the same as the tax on labor.
Doesn’t the effect of lower tax on capital for residents in Hawaii bring additional money into local businesses, creating more employment for residents, just like Gov Green’s tourist tax? Would the tourist tax have the same effect if Hawaii lowers the state tax, but the federal government raises the capital gains tax?
Would raising the tax on capital in Hawaii (and elsewhere) similarly affect the president’s approval rating, like the higher price of gas in Kurtistown might for the average driver? I would guess high gas prices, especially self inflicted high gas prices have some affect on approval or disapproval.

It appears that we have reached that point. Let's see if you deliver on your campaign promise.
