2nd homes empty property tax rates

I can totally see Hawaii following this concept. In fact I'm surprised they haven't already.

Disagree. The GET requires an army of bureaucrats to maintain and enforce.

You're directly attributing that one program with a corresponding increase in property taxes, which isn't necessarily a valid connection.  But yeah, it's true that in most locations property taxes and rental rates just continue to rise.

What year?  I was curious about this and tried finding some mention of it online without success.

"You are probably remembering Oregon’s old renter assistance programs or renter tax refunds that existed decades ago.

Oregon used to have broader renter relief programs that effectively treated part of rent as property tax paid indirectly by tenants. Those programs were gradually reduced and mostly eliminated over time due to budget and policy changes."

'First they came to overtax the property owners, and I did not speak out, because I was not a property owner.

Then they invented special taxing districts, and I did not speak out, because I wasn't subjected to the district.

Then they came for the renter relief deduction, but it had become a one-party state, and there was nobody left to speak for me.'

Scary.

Oh the irony...

I watched a flock of birds flying over a wooded valley this morning, one banked, quickly turned, reversed course and the entire group followed inexplicably, instantly.  Smart? Stupid? Good? Bad? I wondered.  An exhibition of bird brains?

Indeed. I've heard about this, but I wasn't positive it had reached The Big Island until your post.  Thanks for the heads up (no pun intended).  It sounds like the dreaded PCPD (Post Colbert Parrot Disorder) also known as Colbert Migration Meltdown (CMM).  Entire flocks zig-zagging and circling aimlessly not knowing  what the “correct” direction is or what to mimic.  Well, at least you're funny.

With all due respect Tang, I did not know Stephen Colbert had anything to do with Hawaii, and especially Puna.

But you sure do like playing that Reverse Uno Card!

I'm sure you're quite content as to why Colbert is now "off the air!"

Bird brains, indeed. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "Birds of a feather flock together" as I think you're hinting that this is an appropriate phrase. As for the scientific concepts, I remember watching a documentary some years ago, probably narrated by David Attenborough, where the phenomenon you describe was studied. The conclusion was that every bird in the flock watched its immediate neighbors and followed whatever they did. Eventually, it came down to this: whatever the lead bird did in the flock, all the other birds would follow almost instantaneously, without a thought in their little bird brains that this might not be a good idea.

Yes!
Exactly.
