I skimmed the "plan" and I noticed that everything is couched in wishy-washy terms like "prioritize" and "collaborate" and "research" and "review" and "set appropriate conditions" and of course "study". No actual changes to zoning or land use, no new infrastructure...
The reality is that everything is already how and where it is going to be. Existing subdivisions, roads that barely fit their right-of-way, grandfathered commercial uses, local monopolies (read: HELCO), major landowners, lack of infrastructure (eg, water, sewage treatment) and community opposition will prevent any substantive change. Other than perhaps Shipman's New Keeau, if that ever happens.
Hawaii's "highest and best use" is vacation or retirement only.

“This area is being rezoned for natural use, which means where I live I will not be able to live,” D’Alerta said. “This means everything I have ever worked for to have a place to live, for my family to have a place to live, for me to grow food — I will not be able to do that here anymore if this plan is selected.”...
South Kona resident Juhl Rayne also testified via Zoom and called climate change a “stupid lie,” claiming that council members voting in favor of the bill could be held legally accountable....
“This sounds like an agenda for a prison encampment, a dystopian reality by government, NGOs, and foreign interests to rule over the people like Mao once did in China,” she added.
Sara Steiner described the plan as “junk,” warning the council that if they approved it, she would “join the lawsuits,” which elicited scattered applause from the audience and forced the council into a five-minute recess." (more at link)...
The ignorance and stupidity on display here is really pathetic.
This is a good read that touches on the general plan. https://tamhunt.medium.com/what-are-the-...9f704fa736
"..It narrowly advanced on a 6–3 vote, and it leans hard toward the things I care about: steering growth into existing towns to protect rural and agricultural land, planning around watersheds using the ahupuaʻa framework, monitoring local food production, and pushing renewable energy. A competing, slimmed-down version (sometimes called the 2026 plan) has split the Council mainly over how detailed the document should be — a reasonable debate about what belongs in a blueprint versus what belongs in actual ordinances."

kalakoa - The reality is that everything is already how and where it is going to be.
Which has its upsides if you actually like where you live. Those 3 allowed ohanas per lot will really add to that Drive to Hilo though in the coming years - best to avoid at all costs.

Many in Puna have fallen into the Qanon/WEF/Illuminati rabbit hole (which also helped elect the current federal administration) so lots of these concerns are just regurgitating those themes. Can't we at least get some local-grown conspiracies, like the good old days from our own Unko PahoaTed?

Thanks for that - several good posts on that blog (AI generation aside) including this one which addresses the "they're taking our trucks" facebook/email chain directly.
Tam at least seems to know his stuff, which is good given he's running for Hawaii House District 4. Here are his complaints about how little HPP gets for all the taxes it pays, and along with his EV advocacy, seems like PrimalEdge is either running for office or has a kindred spirit rep. ;)

Great eye, Ironyak. Agree. The article is dripping with Bidet Bolshivism.
"The County doesn't flush our toilets", is the best tacit campaign promise I've ever not heard.
Finally, someone is holding space for us and our basic human right to free bowel-productive-care.

Here’s more on the general plan.
https://www.civilbeat.org/2026/06/it-tak...rive-less/
I’ve been meaning to post it for awhile but have been occupied with other pursuits. The article is informative, part interview, part opinion, part editorial, with reader comments generally less conspiratorial or reactionary than some of the social media posts highlighted previously on this thread. (Although some improbable like connecting the Hawaiian islands by a Shinkansen type rail system.)
Bike parking at bus stops, good idea. It definitely works in Japan, the racks are filled, the fee is minimal.
Unfortunately Big Island is not Japan. One house on a one acre lot in HPP would be built out in Japan with approximately 10 structures, houses or multi story apartments. It might also include several single lane paved streets which we would call alleys. This density is what allows an efficient and accessible train and bus system. Yesterday I caught multiple trains, on different lines, at shared stations/hubs that extend to smaller individually operated stations in less populated areas. For a dollar or two. Streets have sidewalks or a bike/pedestrian shoulder painted green. They’re safe. Mothers (and fathers) ride with two children as in the photo below, often without helmets, at a speed I consider fast. It’s quite common. I’ve yet to see a accident:
When I posted about water saving devices on another thread, I noted benefits for the individual or family home, creating less strain on their catchment limitations. But the articles and comments on the general plan also highlight another aspect of lower water use, a reduction of wastewater into cesspools. Also a good idea.
And finally, while I do find Tam Hunt’s ideas and proposals simpatico, as to any personal political ambitions I can only paraphrase Lyndon Johnson "I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of any party for a term in any public office."

I saw the video announcement about his candidacy but didnʻt see his name on the official list of candidates. And Matt has pulled out too.
Certainty will be the death of us.

HereOnThePrimalEdge
that story is stupid as fauk.. Puna is 500 sq miles in size Oahu is 597 sq miles in size, Puna has about 14 traffic lights now, Honolulu has over 800 and Oahu has 1,200. Oahu has 32X more people per sq mile... BI 49 people / sq mile, Oahu 1,600 people /sq mile +tourists
1 Arm WWII stud Hwy aka Saddle road goes basically from sea level to 1,600' higher than Denver Colorado, then back down to basically sea level and many a faka drive that bs to work in Kona or Hilo daily... dont try for compare smaller 'inner kine' islands with 'cane villages' lol to an 'outer island' of 4,028 sq mile in size with the most massive mountain on earth Maunaloa (212X Mt Shasta in mass), and the tallest mountain on earth 33,000' base to summit, Maunakea
again...... Oahu has 32 times more HUMANS than the Big Island, per square inch... iow. while walking in Hilo Town imagine for every 1 faka you see there are 31 more inbred materialistic fakas right next to the inbred.... thats what the materialistic cement island of Oahu is like.

BUT but NO CRIME in Japan. NO Security, NO Bars on every window NO inbred hapa tongan fakas beating up 15yr olds and lifeguards for tikitokie view chit, no inbred Marshallese reetarded fakas shooting icehead homeless fakas w/ BB guns, no stabbing of home invaders BS!!!
oh
and no hapa reetard kine pseudofakas protesting TMT rubbish, while trampling critically endangered plants while taking shits behind koa trees on puuhuluhulu, .........and not being able to name 15 of the 1,200 endemic plants on aina they've never left...

Which has its upsides if you actually like where you live.
Provided you don't mind the lack of jobs and services, sure. Not a bad lifestyle choice, but it takes up all your time.
Oahu has 32X more people per sq mile...
...and that's why Oahu gets to tell Puna how to live. Granted, the General Plan doesn't come from Oahu, but all the State land-use regulations do.
We're facing a similar paradigm here: people in the cities trying to dictate rural land-use issues they simply don't understand. Ironically, these same people fail to realize that rural development is where all the "affordable" housing is -- if you build a house for your personal occupation which is outside city limits and not connected to municipal water/sewer, there are no building codes and inspections are optional. While this regulatory posture is functionally equivalent to most of Puna, ours is codified into law rather than being left to non-enforcement.
