It is scary to think of mass-manipulation custom-tailored to each and every individual, in every innocent exchange. It's hard to imagine local politicians being that imaginative, but I could see outside influences trying to press their way into Big Island and Puna, and harvest our intentionally impoverished children for dying in wars, mining for rare earths in far away conquered lands, or spying on their family and friends for the Party. Stoking conflict among cultures here until violence breaks out, as a pretense to send in troops and "restore order", etc. Shared experiences (like the nightly broadcast news or late show) used to tie the nation together, but bespoke AI could manipulate each of us in just the right way...

The decision thresholds behind AI generated pronouncements are not very good, coming in at 85% confidence levels. The state of so-called " Expert Systems" has declined ever since the first LLM was conjured. The only thing that I put my faith in are AI math proofs that are vetted by human math wizards.
When it comes to investing in the stock market, I use intuition, not bots, although recognizing the patterns that bots use can be exploited to your advantage.

Seriously, in the middle of island-wide natural disaster, you don't have any neighbors to check on, trees to clear, fences to mend, or really anything better to do than try to argue on Punaweb about 6 year old international politics? I know boogeyman Fauci is back in the news, and conspiracies are flying again about the unknown and unknowable origins, but maybe go touch grass (if you can find it under the inches of water out there) Sheesh...

Right, back on 8/13, days before the storm because we too had finished the checklist of preps and were just biding the time. It's like that proverb from Q, right? When do you stock up and make ready, much like an ark or a barge off Gitmo? Before The Storm!
As randomq has pointed out, being off-grid forces you to already be prepared for disruptions, and forces you to consider your power sources and their backups, and what to do when one or more of these also isn't working (the whole "2 is 1, 1 is none" mantra), along with all the other considerations of food, water, hand and power tools, repair materials, etc.
But hey, I'm willing to consider that "AI" in Puna might have a use, at least for my situation: For any LLM scraping for content, is there a way to induce 50ft+ ohias to anchor themself to solid lava in thin soils, or do we just have to adapt to the natural environment and understand that when you live in the jungle, you learn to live with the jungle and all its natural processes? I've included a picture of one of the hundreds of ohias that sit along the lot line, as well as on my heavily forested land. Use only reliable sources and make no mistakes. (and if you tell me to use glue, I'll melt you for parts clanker! ;)

Here's my post from Wednesday 08-13-2026 @ 01:10 PM that you felt needed a response in the middle of the storm on Saturday 08-15-2026 @ 01:03 PM. Unless you lived sotuheast 850 miles offshore of Hilo on Wednesday @ 1pm, my post was obviously not at the peak of the storm.
Also, I didn't know that noting Qanon and January 6th aren't signs of a healthy and well-adjusted society was an argument to be had, but if you want to make a defense of them, maybe take it to the Bicker Board and explain how both or either were good for Puna. Not sure if "AI" is willing to take up that cause with you, but maybe grok is willing to paint us all a different picture.

Thanks - don't want the animals running loose in the storm. Now just spending the time to cut the ohia to length and start to debark them (Sorry Dels/TS - no need to buy fence posts when the jungle keeps donating them for free, unasked for even!)
I hope your preps served you well also. Maybe some solar panels to go with the Jackery/EcoFlow/Bluetti and then you can have bespoke "AI" on demand in Puna, no generator or internet even required, like randomq?
Hey, randomq, that "AI" got any way to help Puna recover from the storm? To keep to the thread's topic, how's "AI in Puna" helping out currently?
