AI in Puna
#31
What happens when “Mount Kīlauea” collides with Hurricane Lala?  Or vice versa.  Does it matter?
Probably less of a disaster than when Fox “News” “Weather” meets AI.

As a spelunker on the island, one knows the roots of Ohia (they're dark purple/red with lighter red tips) well, and often sees them developed into large columns, many inches, a foot in diameter, that reach from the top of a tube to its floor and then burrows even deeper. I've seen these many times, on all sides of the island, and have never seen any other types of tree roots in tubes.

As such, I imagine the Ohias you're looking at are likewise rooted. Even if there's no tube the roots are going deep into, following any crack they can find.. and expanding to get locked into the rock they're penetrating. Of course.. more cracks.. less cracks.. wider/thinner cracks.. in Pahoehoe, Aa.. all sorts of variable to dictate how well that can help support them.. or not.

Ionyak posted:  Also, I didn't know that noting Qanon and January 6th aren't signs of a healthy and well-adjusted society was an argument to be had, but if you want to make a defense of them, maybe take it to the Bicker Board and explain how both or either were good for Puna. Not sure if "AI" is willing to take up that cause with you, but maybe grok is willing to paint us all a different picture.

That is hysterical.  It is your job to explain how January 6th and Qanon belong on Punaweb and are either good or bad for Puna.  You posted about them here, not I.  Still no music but the tap dancing is entertaining...

Punatang - It is your job to explain how January 6th and Qanon belong on Punaweb and are either good or bad for Puna.

Seems odd having to connect these dots for you of all people, but okay - Sherman, set the Wayback Machine for Oct 2020 in which we find:
* QAnon Conspiracies, Proud Boys And The Future of Hawaii’s GOP, where the Hawai'i GOP candidates are catching heat for promoting the Qanon conspiracy theory "that President Donald Trump is in an epic battle with a secret cabal of Satan worshipping pedophiles comprised of Democrats and Hollywood elites who are running a global sex trafficking ring that harvests the blood of children." One of those candidates is Nicholas Ochs, "the founder of the Hawaii chapter of the Proud Boys, a far-right organization of Trump supporters with a penchant for political violence."

* January 8th, 2021 - Nicholas Ochs, "the founder of the Hawaii chapter of the Proud Boys who boasted on social media about storming the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday was arrested and charged by the federal government for taking part in the riot." (He would later be pardoned in 2025 by President Trump)

My assertion is that online conspiratorial beliefs that radicalize people into violence based on nothing but made up fantasies and lies is not a sign of a healthy and well-adjusted society both here in Hawai'i and elsewhere. Is there an argument here to be had?

The question of the thread was "What effect does AI have on people in Puna?" and the predominate impact I see is the AI slop videos being passed around in local facebook groups that extend and build upon Qanon's all-encompassing conspiracy theory model including how the Lahaina fires were caused by a Directed Energy Weapon (which is also what those green streaks seen over Mauna Kea in the early morning hours during the height of the Perseid meteor showers were, actually, for those who "know" the UN agenda of the global elites), or the chemtrails over Pahoa story Julie pointed out (perennial favorite those chemtrails - big hit on all islands, check your local DVD collections), and how the Hawaii County General Plan is a UN agenda to take their truck, and so on.

The largest impact AI in Puna is having apparently is to provide more mis- and dis-information brainrot fodder for people to disconnect from reality and take their imagined grievances to potentially violent ends, like January 6th, including against local politicians. Sounds bad for Puna, to me at least, given we have actual challenges in the real world to address, but opinions clearly differ (again, see facebook, or don't, really)

online conspiratorial beliefs that radicalize people into violence based on nothing …both here in Hawai'i… Nicholas Ochs, "the founder of the Hawaii chapter of the Proud Boys who boasted on social media about storming the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday was arrested and charged by the federal government for taking part in the riot."

And allow those hypnotized by BrainWashington DC to choose ala carte which law enforcement agents they support or personally attack.  Uniformed officers with badge and identification are somehow OK to attack even kill.  Camo wearing, masked, armed, no ID, agents are no problem.  Just doing their job.  Often minimally trained for days or a week or two.

Wow, half of the island has no electricity, Folks on our island are devastated.  I'm out all day helping neighbors and you're ranting about 6 year old national politics, on Punaweb.  Sheesh...

I did find a perfect example, here on Punaweb, of the type of online radicalization folks here seem to be referring to:

Punatang - Thanks Durian Fiend for being the adult in the room.  I'm disappointed that the wink wink nod nod support for domestic terrorism has been allowed to stand in this thread.

Radicalized poster posted: Not sure why you think there is any "wink wink nod nod" involved - every major social movement tends to have a radical wing that makes the moderate calls for reform more palatable. For every Frederick Douglass there is a John Brown, for Kue Petitions a Wilcox Rebellion, for Thoreau a Goldman, for MLK Jr a Malcolm X. Seems somewhat immature to not recognize this trend, maybe as naive as to deny that when you send chickens out in the Puna morning air from your coop, those chickens return that evening to your coop, not your neighbor's coop, and that never makes one sad, only glad (see fellow kids, that is how you wink and nod Wink

It seems like we are getting distracted by the AI we have access to.  Now we are divided, in no small measure by AI, over how AI is dividing us.  I think what we are calling AI (grok, chat, etc) is a bunch of parlor tricks, as many have, quite correctly, pointed out here.  When people get excited that "the AI bubble" is popping - I think maybe, but even when that bubble pops there will still be AI. We need to be a bit more united and a bit more focused on that AI that we do not have access to.  Einstein said:  "I do know what weapons world war III will be fought with but world war IV will be fought with sticks and stones."  I think the reality is that world war IV might very well be fought by machines and they very likely won't be consulting any humans.

If you feel that way, then please explain just exactly what you mean here:

(08-15-2026, 11:03 PM)Punatang Wrote: It is indeed shocking.  We are amazed that there are wet marketards, still out there, even now, living and voting in Puna.  Hard to figure.

Specifically, what do you mean with the term "wet marketards?'

Hard as I try to put my head around that, I am unaware of their being ANY "wet markets" in Puna, Hilo, The Big Island or Hawaii. And also, please explain the use of the term "tards" at the end of "wet market."

Then, while you're at it, please explain the need to add the hyphen and capital Q after poster randomq's name.

(08-14-2026, 03:58 AM)Punatang Wrote: Lately Random-Q, you have been hitting nail after nail on the head.  The future is now.

These two posts sure seem to be prime examples of a "wink wink nod nod" support of something you're trying to convey in the way you post quite frequently here Tang. As others have pointed out as well. If you're disappointed, just look at yourself as to why. Maybe?

Oh, and the future is always the future. Today was tomorrow yesterday.

Wow, half of the island has no electricity, Folks on our island are devastated.

If this is an emergency situation, shouldn’t the most accurate information be provided for Folks who are devastated?  So they can act accordingly? Especially specific details from those who have clearly stated they are concerned about the content of posts in context of current conditions?

Civil Defense messages yesterday noted:
HECO expects to restore power to 95% of customers by Friday.

Can we do better?  Perhaps offer the capitalized Folks objective statistics from informed sources, rather than argumentative subjective spin?

Demands that a post from last week be explained to them, then complains that the explanation is provided - shucks, guess I fell for the "gotcha". And here I was thinking I was helping a Puna neighbor, during a meal break and taking randomq's signature line to heart, and doing it all without calling anyone a "tard" of any sort.

I did find a perfect example, here on Punaweb, of the type of online radicalization folks here seem to be referring to: "every major social movement tends to have a radical wing that makes the moderate calls for reform more palatable" ... John Brown, Wilcox Rebellion, Emma Goldman, Malcolm X
Well there's plenty of evidence for the existence of slavery, government overthrow, labor violations and forced conscription, and systemic racism. Not so much for satanists drinking the blood of children in pizza parlor basements and widespread election fraud. There are real challenges and injustices in the world, but the lives of the people in Puna aren't going to be improved by trying to get them to battle made-up boogeymen and fairy tales (such as "Lala is a result of weather modification technology by Bill Gates" currently making the rounds online, with AI images to boot, much like immediately after the Lahaina fire. Bunch of free thinkers out there spreading state-sponsored AI-enhanced propaganda).

MyManao - I imagine the Ohias you're looking at are likewise rooted ... all sorts of variable to dictate how well that can help support them.. or not.
(Welcome back :) I didn't get any pictures this time (not sure the phone would have survived the wind and rain power washing going on), but when one of these large ohia comes down (the Kona lows have been particularly impactful) it usually has a flat root structure that is 6 - 10 feet across, but maybe 4 - 6 inches inches deep at best, and leaves a bare patch of pahoehoe behind. If the tree hasn't damaged anything, I tend to leave it, as some will sprout new vertical growth from its now horizontal trunk, but most will die off and the carbon cycle will do its thing, jungle style.

Mostly I was just noting that much of Puna life, in my experience at least, requires living and interacting with some immediacy in the real world, in which AI has very little of value to contribute. Such as...

Edge - What happens when “Mount Kīlauea” collides with Hurricane Lala?  Or vice versa.  Does it matter?  Probably less of a disaster than when Fox “News” “Weather” meets AI.
"If an eruption were to occur during Hurricane Lala, it could lead to catastrophic events such as deadly flooding from rain and strong winds." Well as an eruption didn't occur during Lala, clearly we did not have deadly flooding or strong winds. Thanks "AI" - how could anyone ever question your insights and contributions to Puna affairs!

Ironyak: Demands that a post from last week be explained to them

100% false gaslighting.  You posted about that national nonsense.  I pointed out that you posted about that national nonsense.  YOU DEMANDED that I go to the bickerboard and explain and engage with your national nonsense.  I refused and found that idea quite hysterical.  I did not want an explanation of your national nonsense.  I did not think my refusal was in any way an invite for you to launch into such a wild and shocking diatribe about 6 year old non Puna nonsense about national nonsense. Punaweb, especially right now, is not the place for all of that nonsense IMHO.
