Hurricane season 2026
In as much as we hope ALL of our Hawaii citizens remain safe and sound during Lowell's antics in Hawaii, especially our fellow citizens on Kauai as well as right here in Puna, and while there is obviously no "god" whatsoever in existence to keep some safe nor hurt others under any circumstance as well as in light of the blatant attempts of the (miss)appropriation of the Hawaiian culture elsewhere on PunaWeb, as well as other cultures, and to add some good old fashioned Hawaiian humor to the mix, I offer this "News Report:"

Lihue is showing South winds at 32 mph and gusts to 61 at this time.  They will likely see some wind damage.

They will likely see some wind damage.

I’ve seen some reports of trees down, power out, but fortunately Kauai was on the least damaging side of the storm. I received this update from Aloha Cargo this morning, so they must have experienced some impacts at their facility:

Aloha Valued Customer,

Due to damage sustained from Hurricane Lowell, our Kauai Station will be closed until further notice. At this time, we will also not be accepting any cargo destined for Lihue.

The ECMWF forecast for this week shows the low pressure system now southeast of the islands intensifying into a tropical storm later in the week, nearing Big Island but passing south around Saturday.  Probably some rain, some wind:

We NEED more rain. I've only recorded 170 inches so far this year at my place.

Durgin now says 1-2 feet by Saturday!

I hate when he uses "spectacular" and "rain" in the same sentence.
Certainty will be the death of us.

This is seriously looking really bad, now forecast to become a hurricane and turn directly toward the Big Island.

Yes, it does look bad. Durgin:

"...15E is broad and disorganized so it will take time to form its structure. From the satellite animation shear is less than 12 hours ago. The GFS shows the shear continuing to decrease providing 15E with an environment favorable to further intensification... warm sea surface temperatures, low to moderate shear, and plenty of moist air to work with. As such all models show 15E developing into a cyclone as it moves towards the north in response to a break in the ridge being caused by an upper level trough. The handling of this trough breaks into two camps.

On one side the GFS and the ICON take the trough farther west and south quickly. As the trough moves, 15E continually turns towards it, resulting in a path that avoids our island.

On the other side we have the ECMWF and the CMC which have a more easterly solution for the upper level trough. As 15E moves towards the trough it takes a path over our island..."
