I've seen a lot of gentrification in Puna over the past 3 decades.  Used to be just about everyone who lived in the district was relatively poor.  Now I bet there are more middle class people moving in to most of the subdivisions than poor.

HiloJulie - No wonder Hawaii, and America is where we are right now.
Same as it ever was? Can't get any more Americana Hawai'i than the King himself - at least the downtrodden Acres doesn't get the snow part of the deal!

Has anyone bought coffee filters lately?  I just saw packs of 200 are now almost $10.  Not that many years ago they were $3.00.  I can get them in Japan for ¥100 which is around 70 cents.  Coffee at Costco was $15.00, now it’s over $25.  Glad those Canadians (paper) and Brazilians (coffee) are paying the tariffs, I can’t imagine how much my morning cup would cost otherwise.

No wonder there’s a steady stream of cars along the cliffs at night, coming and going, buying and selling Puna ghetto drugs.  They probably can’t afford the coffee anymore.

That's not racism, it's simply a perceived insult. Have you noticed no one has seconded your outrage about either MyManao's or kalianna's word choices?
So, you also see MyManao's comments as a perceived insult, which is the only posting MyMano does, is to insult. Unless of course, you shower him with words of affection, then you could not find a better friend.

And as you say, no one has seconded my outrage over MyManao's and kalianna's word choices. Could it be possible, that no one replied to either of them as who really wants to discuss a topic with a foul-mouthed 70ish year-old man who loves to toss the "F" bomb at every turn and another poster who mainly posts about her ignore/unignore fetish and apparently has flatulence and bowel movement issues as well?

Rob:  Assume the best and ask questions.
Julie:  Assume the worst and make accusations.
Sorry padre, you, and the Tangy are the ones who accused me of making all these posts about the "ghetto" and "trailer trash" apparently totally oblivious to the dozens of posts MyManao has made with this racist insulting rhetoric. Or could it be that you just simply don't read his stinky garbage can of thoughts like most others?

That's certainly true for me.
OK, so you afford to live here in Hawaii because its cheap and you too apparently think this is a ghetto as well. I take it then that you must know about trailer parks.

No way man! middle class moving into the Puna "ghettos?" It can't be. Only the poor downtrodden EBT takers can live in Puna's "ghettos" right? The middle class, they belong in that high flautin fancy underground utilities town of Waimea now don't ya know!

Oh, there is "snow" in the Acres, not just the kind Elvis sang about! Where do you think those South Kohala Estate and Waimea living millionaires get their "stash" from?

I suppose next you're going to tell me you have a fancy electric coffee maker in your "ghetto" "trailer park!"

Thanks for your support of my thesis.

Nope.  I learned my lesson years ago from a friend on the mainland.  He bought his property cheap cheap cheap back in the 1980’s.  Since that time the area has been discovered by tech bros from Seattle.  One of them gave my buddy his “old” coffee maker that looks like a calliope sitting on a chunk of his countertop.  Bells, whistles, tubes. Push a button and it grinds your beans, brews a fresh cup of the most delicious coffee you’ll ever drink.

My friend started to wonder, what happens if this thing ever breaks?  He checked, it cost $5000.  Now, his joy of exquisitely brewed coffee is also tempered with a tinge of sadness because he knows he could never in his right mind pay $5000 for a coffee maker.

Of course there’s always the hope that one of the neighbors might need another newer machine for no discernible reason?  Maybe his stock options hit a big, higher, rounded off number with lots of zeros?

Right?

Well, I learned from the master!

Would you like if I posted a screen shot of the post that got you a 1-week vacation?

No, I don't see MyManao's comment about ghettos as an insult. That's why the word "perceived" preceded it, to show that YOU were the one taking offense.  The trailer park comment is a non sequitur.

No one besides you has expressed displeasure with his word choices or Kalianna's post because no one else finds them offensive.

Pointing out that you've used the term ghetto in jest to describe your subdivision is not an accusation, it's an observation.

Pretty much every one of your posts where you're disagreeing with someone includes an  accusation or insult of some flavor.

A friend of mine reports his property tax has gone from $1200 at some time in the past to $4600 today!   Yes, he lives in Puna.  Big Grin

See above post above. I have learned from the master!

Would it be appropriate if I used the terms used in the embedded link but changed the names to yours and MyManao's?

The poors in my neck of the 'hood solve this financial dilemma by using a French Press instead. Or you can forgo the aesthetics of hot water and pricey beans entirely and just go with nickle-a-piece, easy to stockpile, generic caffeine pills like a true Acres Libertarian. Addicts gotta feed their addiction, whether they live by the cliffs or just visit as needed! ;)

Well with the way things are headed, maybe we too can can reap the benefits from an economic collapse, deflationary cycle, and some lost decades. Just think of the savings!
