Sunscreen

The guinea pigs might be those who don’t wear sunscreen.

The guinea pigs might be those who don’t wear sunscreen [that does not contain chemicals].

Sunscreen fine in my opinion.  Chemicals bad, for us and the environment, in my opinion.

Um... chemicals are you and the environment. UV not so much, although it does induce some "interesting" chemical changes, especially in the sun-drenched isles of Hawai'i.

Chemicals bad, for us and the environment

Does anyone here use shampoo? Soap? Detergents? Toothpaste? Skin lotions? Neosporin? Prescriptions?Vitamins? Can we look around our bathroom, kitchen, tool shed and not find any chemicals?  Or plastics which are full of chemicals?

I use aloe vera

There's quite the variety of aloe hereabouts. I have found one that has a clear juice, with little to no odor, that really takes the edge off when my skin feels a little too 'hot' from a day under the sun.

Mind, as I said earlier.. a hat is essential. I got one of those with a cloth extension that drapes down over my neck and shoulders.. and don't go anywhere without it.

I suppose I am fortunate. I have a friend that is predisposed to Melanoma that can't stand the sun.. whereas I am not. I count my blessings. And omg I love the sun!

I will point out.. we.. humans.. have been here for eons.. and sunscreen is one of those new fangled inventions that's.. as Edge points out.. on a long list of new compounds we're all exposed to. But god knows, exposure in an of itself doesn't imply safe.. or healthy. Maybe all that isn't the best way to go.. maybe a lot of what ales us.. what ales our planet.. mother.. is on that list.

Or basic chemistry...

Aloe is cool, but is also chemicals. Strangely enough that hat - chemicals too. Everything you've ever eaten, breathed, worn, and held in your hand - chemicals. Every bone, muscle, nerve, and thought you have - chemicals.

It's almost like the complexity of reality requires a more nuanced discussion of its attributes and how they can be helpful or harmful to living things and wider ecosystems. Maybe even entire fields of study developed over centuries, along with some collective mechanism to apply this knowledge and how it impacts every facet of experience from air and water quality to food and medicine safety.

Or I guess one could try to pretend to avoid chemicals - plenty of that going around in Puna.

Thanks to Edge I found a Biore potion with a Cat's paw motif, which is forcing me to rethink the whole shebang.

Amazing the rethinking that one can achieve with an open mind not poisoned by the "they are bad and the problem, we are good and only we can fix the problem" as well as being grounded in reality.

See ya on Saturday at the Bayfront!
