Disgust-O-Meter tilts past complete abomination
#1
My nose has always been an overly sensitive organ that my wife has often mocked and at other times has just plain ignored in aversion. Its acute ability to pick up offensive breath, unpleasant bodily smells as well as other noxious odors has led to feelings of paranoia. For me this sense of smell has been both a curse and a blessing. It’s true that at times this ability has been a source of distraction during what other wise would have been a pleasant conversation with someone or other. On the other hand I have often enjoyed the pleasant aroma of some far off flower during an evening stroll. But the old schnozzola has recently earned its keep in spades.

During this last week I noticed an increasing evil smell every time I took a shower or even washed my hands. My wife didn’t seem to notice anything out of the ordinary but me on the other hand became more and more distraught every time water ran anywhere in the house. I was sure something foul was afoot somewhere. On Sunday I decided to take a peek under our catchment’s cover to see if anything was amiss. To my complete horror I found a bloated adult Mongoose cadaver floating atop the surface of our doughboy pool. Suddenly the past week passed before my eyes amid waves of deep nausea. Every shower, every dish washing, every hand cleansing, every vegetable soaking and every tooth brush rinsing came back in wave after wave of pure abhorrence.

After rushing to Puna’s hardware store to purchase a pool skimmer I gingerly scooped the filth out of our water source. I managed to extract the unsightly beast all in one piece and then carried it far into the woods to find its final resting place. After returning to my doughboy to skim away leaves and other bits of unwanted debris my liver really gave out. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse I found the evil beast's spawn also where it didn’t belong but this time at the bottom of the pool instead of at its surface. When I tried to dip this one out with my new bought skimmer it turned into the devil’s own gravy. My sensibilities suffered an even worse blow.

Well you can bet I didn’t take any water with my meal that night but rather several quarts of beer down at Luquin’s. When I think of it I’m not sure I’ll ever drink anything other than liquor again. Maybe even brush my teeth with the stuff.

My new motto: Proboscis Rex.

If I can't get to sleep tonight... I know who to blame[^]

Dang dude... I feel for you.

I've got a catchment story of my own to tell...

The night before a wedding down nanawale... we were all preparing the church the night before and a friend of a bridesmaid came up from Oahu to attend. He got assigned the assignment of making the stew for everyone...

Problem is... no one told him the church's water wasn't potable until about 3 hours into cooking the stew.... We all had a good laugh at him... Someone went to cash and carry to p/u more water... buggah when add more "fresh" water to the stew.... try and re-cook the buggah as if nothing happened...

By the time we all sat down to grind... word got around that the stew was stewed in non-filtered water.... needless to say.... the pigs got fed.

So, not being a catchment user, I wonder......what do you do now? Do you have to empty and clean the whole pool? How did the buggah get in there? Can it be prevented in the future?

Suddenly paying a little more for a well doesn't seem like such a bad idea[Wink] The good news is wells cost significantly less than a year ago.

In a world where cesspools are legal I'll take catchment over a well any day.

I had a similar experience a few years ago. For a couple of weeks, I noticed the strong smell of something dead and putrefying around my house. I tried to find the source of odor but couldn't. Some months later I was looking at my roof when I noticed the dessicated remains of a mynah bird. I was immediatedly digusted by thoughts of the putrid juices from the decaying bird going into my catchment tank.

No worries JWFITZ, the ground water is clean[Smile] And even if you had bacteria in your well water, it is so easy to correct that it realy isn't even an issue.

Andrew, I love the way you shared your story, you're a very good writer. I'm sorry that Happened to you[Sad]

I had a wood rat in my water tanks ... same drama .. I learned to keep a cover on tanks and catchment - amazing what can find their way in there ... especially when things get a little dry

clean rinse and chlorinate water the system - how well I know that drill... and when its gets really nasty - a little iodine

Hi gang:

I have a fellow named Stephan (sp?) who is supposed to come over today to drain, disinfect and refill the pool. Ah showers again.

We have a really good black cover for the tank that is secured with a cinched tight wire all the way round the perimeter. Also the cover is weighted down with cinder blocks. I can't figure out how they got into the water in the first place. The only possible way they may have gotten in is where the water input pipes enter the tank. There are small gaps where the cover goes over the pipes. They must have squeezed up through there.

Andrew
