Damon, you've posted a number of articles on your blog about the telescopes on Mauna Kea, if I remember correctly. So I certainly do find it shocking that you or anyone else living here (and is healthy) hasn't been up there. From Pahoa you can be at the summit within 2 hours!

for those that haven't ventured to the summit, and yes the place is swarming with tourist at sunset, a pic of a 'typical' sunset from the top of the mountain is at

OK, we haven't been to the summit - yet. We do have a neighbor that works at the CFHT and gave us this awesome DVD. You can check it out and even buy a copy at

I can vouch for David's recommendation of the Hawaiian Starlight DVD, it's stunning (no, I don't work at the CFHT!).
As for the photo allngood points to, it was taken by the photographer Wally Pacholka who is well known for his amazing night time photos, several of which he's taken on the Big Island and elsewhere in Hawai`i. His website is at
http://www.brightnightgallery.com/ and has plenty of Mauna Kea photos there. It's well worth a visit even if you don't want to buy the pictures!
