Eruption - The Book, (And Now The Thread!)
#1
Beach or lava rock read.
Tuck it inside a magazine so you don’t get protested (military, lava eruption, might it even contain … diversion?)

Michael Crichton & James Patterson
Eruption

The biggest thriller of the year: A history-making eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. But a secret held for decades by the US military is far more terrifying than any volcano.

“The book is a classic summer beach read...Eruption will revive the art of speed-reading...told with a singular voice that is a compelling amalgam of the two writers.”

Thanks HOTPE for mentioning this new book! Interesting backstory on how Crichton had penned the original manuscript around 40 years ago.

At any event, I was able to reserve a copy at the Barnes and Noble in Oahu where I will pick it up later this week when hopping over to visit with some friends!

And yes, the US Military holding secrets about the telescopes volcano is pure Punatic heaven!

Here are some l o n g excerpts from the book.  Keep scrolling to the bottom where there are a handful of 30 second promo videos.

Are we Big Island residents and tourists terrified?  Yes we are!

“We expect this to be a fairly large eruption,” he said, “and we expect that it will come within the next two weeks, perhaps much sooner than that.”
Wendy Watanabe from one of the Honolulu TV stations raised a hand. “At what point will HVO raise the volcano alert level?”
“While Mauna Loa is at elevated unrest, the level remains at advisory/yellow,” MacGregor said. “We remain focused on the northeast rift zone.”
Everybody else on the HVO staff had seen famous eruptions on videotape.
MacGregor had been there. If he was acting this quickly and decisively now, he had his reasons. He’d been there. He knew.
He also knew enough not to explain in detail that HVO was tracking the biggest eruption in a century—that would only have caused a panic, no matter which side of the volcano was going to blow.
There was one other thing that Mac knew and Jenny knew but the media didn’t.
John MacGregor was lying his ass off.
He knew exactly when the eruption was coming, and it wasn’t two weeks or even one.
Five days.
And counting.

The picture on the cover speaks volumes. Iʻm skeptical already. They know exactly when the eruption is coming?? I doubt it. Is this a near future scenario? Although near future from 40 years go would be about 20 years ago.
Certainty will be the death of us.

It’s a work of fiction.  One of the authors wrote Jurassic Park (dinosaurs cloned and living in the present day at a large zoo type enclosure for the amusement of humans, what could possibly go wrong?) as well as many other imaginative tales.

“It’s a work of fiction”

No way! Come on now HOTPE!

Everyone knows that the military has huge top secrets UNDER and on TOP OF BOTH volcanoes!

They know exactly when it will blow us all away and the military will sit back and laugh at us. Don’t bother asking Tom, he’ll just deny deny deny as usual.

(Above words are presented as “fiction” No harm to land, environment people or animals occurred while posting this)

In all seriousness, having to explain that a book is fiction is a sad indictment of the human race.

Iʻve read a lot of sci fi books that are much more fi than sci. One can only go so far with willing suspension of disbelief. Thats why I donʻt read much sci fi any more.

"having to explain that a book is fiction is a sad indictment of the human race." Only you believe that you had to explain that and only you believe itʻs an indictment of the human race. Bye Julie. Youʻre joining the ranks of the elite few who will be ignored.
Certainty will be the death of us.

I can imagine you ignore a lot of things in life.

At any event, please don't be upset that I am unable to mourn that you have ignored me.

I'm still in a state of shock at finding out that Jurassic Park is NOT REAL. Damn you HOTPE!

Obviously this whole book is cultural appropriation. No one but native Hawaiians should be writing about Mauna Loa. Block the roads to all the book stores!
