RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - HawaiiEV - 05-12-2022 I’m glad you talked to them. There are plenty who are not ignorant or good winked. Also glad you are familiar with the stories. I firmly believe talk story the best way to work through things. I’m sure they respected you for sharing with them. RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - TomK - 05-17-2022 Bill 2024 has been transmitted to the gov. Let's see what happens next. https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=HB&billnumber=2024&year=2022 RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - TomK - 05-19-2022 Just a nice reminder of one of the things the observatories do on the island; AstroDay made its return last Saturday with an in-person event in Hilo. https://bigislandnow.com/2022/05/05/get-ready-for-a-trip-to-the-cosmos-during-astroday-2022/ https://www.hawaii.edu/news/2022/05/18/astroday-makes-full-return/ RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - TomK - 05-28-2022 Quick update - the UH Board of Regents approved the updated Maunakea management plan. https://www.hawaii.edu/news/2022/05/24/bor-approves-updated-maunakea-cmp/ RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - 'elepaio - 05-29-2022 TomK, the question inquiring minds want to know: Is your job at risk ?? RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - TomK - 06-25-2022 This seems to be a bit strange given one of the reasons that OMKM, now CMS, was considered a bad steward of Mauna Kea, hence bill 2024. Now we get this: UH Hilo honored for stewardship of Maunakea "The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce honored the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Center for Maunakea Stewardship (CMS) with its 2022 Pūalu Award for Community Education on Friday, June 24. The award honors organizations that promote and support education and enrichment programs that develop personal skills and lifelong learning. CMS was commended for its innovative efforts in native plant restoration and invasive species management. “We are moved by this acknowledgement which helps shine a spotlight on our dedicated CMS staff members who pour their hearts into stewarding these precious lands,” said Nahua Guilloz, director of stewardship at CMS. “Enriching the ecosystem on the mauna helps to bridge other aspects of the project together that opens the door to educating and connecting with all who come to Maunakea.”" https://www.hawaii.edu/news/2022/06/24/uh-hilo-honored-for-maunakea-stewardship/ RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - kalakoa - 06-25-2022 Mixed messages in Hawaii? Unpossible... but we'll find out in just a couple more days. RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 06-26-2022 was considered a bad steward of Mauna Kea Ironically the people making that claim left the Mauna Kea Access Road area strewn with refuse, which the county picked up with their workers and trucks. Protestors/Protectors were probably too busy posting on Facebook about poor stewardship to engage in actual stewardship. RE: Astronomy in Hawaii under threat? - kalakoa - 06-28-2022 I didn't see the Mauna Kea Management bill on Ige's Veto List. |
