RE: Rat lungworm has a ground zero, Puna. - Kenney - 04-19-2017 The "gist" of the news conference as I understood it: The sick people (new cases) shared a bowl of Kava tea. When Pau, they found a slug in the bottom of the bowl. Mixture had been left uncovered overnight outside. DOH "assumes" there were more slugs in the murky mixture that were ingested , as slugs "marinating" wouldn't have enough RLW to cause 6 people to get sick. 2 cases unconfirmed because spinal tap was possibly done " too early" in disease process to turn up in CSF. (Or too late after worms moved to the brain) Testing spinal fluid is the "only" test we have now. All shared same Kava mixture and have the same symptoms. 2 already tested positive. RE: Rat lungworm has a ground zero, Puna. - kalakoa - 04-19-2017 Pretty easy to prevent that . Not easy enough, apparently. So you claim that organic farming doesn't use commercial practices? I think the implication is that "commercial practices" includes some kind of regulatory oversight which is missing from the "small organic farm". (My point above is that "oversight" doesn't necessarily get you anything, especially if it can only detect contamination which has already left the farm.) RE: Rat lungworm has a ground zero, Puna. - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-19-2017 So you claim that organic farming doesn't use commercial practices? Would you prefer to discuss semantics or the topic at hand? If you search you'll find the following terms used interchangeably when discussing organic farming versus: Conventional Commercial Industrial Do organic farms engage in commerce or make a profit or use a tractor or other commonly used planting and harvesting techniques? Yes. But that's not the definition I was using. The word commercial has a lengthy number of meanings in the dictionary and in common use. Walk into Island Naturals and ask ten people what a commercial farm is. See how many reply that it's a farm which uses chemical fertilizers and pesticides. I would guess 10 out of 10 would offer you that as their reply. It's a relief that the new cases of rat lungworm could have been prevented by simply placing a lid on the kava bowl, but unfortunate that Puna is splashed all over the news again linking us to the parasite. Unless it results in providing more response from Hawaii health officials. We can hope the cumulative news stories eventually have that effect. On the fifth day - the scientists who studied the rivers - were forbidden to speak - or to study the rivers. -Jane Hirshfield's poem on creation RE: Rat lungworm has a ground zero, Puna. - MarkP - 04-19-2017 How similar is kava to beer? I mean, you set uncovered containers of beer out overnight to catch slugs. Neighbor properties were inspected this week, though not positive, seems it may have been on the root.... But it is time for all of us to look at how we consume produce...Infection from Maui may have been from a restaurant salad, the infection here from drink left out I know a lot of people are remarking about that, but I know I have done gardening & picnicking with a drink on the ground...something none of us should feel comfortable about now! Aloha
RE: Rat lungworm has a ground zero, Puna. - Kenney - 04-21-2017 Aloha glassnumbers. The map is somewhat helpful, however I doubt it tells the whole story. It only shows areas where the slugs have been tested. And yes, 90% in Puna is a high number, thus Puna is ground zero for RLW in the US. I think it's a good idea to just assume all slugs in Puna are infected and remain vigilant. Better safe than sorry. |
