RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - Guest - 09-01-2017 More on OHA'S Peter Apo and his recent rash of violations. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/36268097/oha-trusteee-admits-to-ethics-violations-involving-thirty-meter-telescope At least Mr Apo did not remain silent about his support for the TMT to be built on his people's mauna of Mauna Kea. RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - TomK - 09-02-2017 http://www.ilind.net/2015/04/24/obscenity-laced-facebook-post-calls-for-killing-telescope-supporters/ See how easy this is? http://ilind.net/misc%20/2015/iona_facebook.jpg RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - PaulW - 09-02-2017 http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/local-news/human-remains-placed-tmt-site This same guy breaking the law in the story above is a convicted drug dealer. Very easy indeed. RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - Guest - 09-02-2017 The astronomy capitol of the world's pipeline university enrollment has been steadily declining. UHH who leases the summit lands of Mauna Kea to a dozen or more large telescopes, possibly the future home to the TMT has had a declining enrollment for the past six years. Maybe UHH could stop raising the tuition rate and lower the education standards to let more local kids get into the university once again. http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2017/09/02/video-senator-kahele-lectures-uh-on-declining-enrollment/ Could it be that Hawaii's Public Schools are not preparing the majority of our keiki for a college level of education? Where does Hawaii's Public schools rank nationally these days? What is the UHH graduation percentage these days? Meanwhile, the PUEO group who has been pushing for the TMT and another Imiloa center to be built on Mauna Kea. http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2017/09/03/pueo-pushes-for-imiloa-uka-in-final-tmt-case-document/ RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - TomK - 09-02-2017 Gypsy wrote: "Maybe UHH could stop raising the tuition rate and lower the education standards to let more local kids get into the university once again." I'm not convinced that's a good way to go. How about increasing educational standards at schools so students can go to a university? Otherwise, you end up with the universities spending much of their time bringing students up to the level of past high school graduates which means more teaching time and increased costs. RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - Guest - 09-03-2017 TomK, With all the help from the astronomy capitol of the world over the past fifty plus years where does Hawaii's public schools rank nationally today? RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - PaulW - 09-03-2017 How education is administered is up to the Department of Education. The astronomy community (and others) can only offer money and encouragement. Not good enough for you? You want them to take over the schools? RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - TomK - 09-03-2017 "With all the help from the astronomy capitol of the world over the past fifty plus years where does Hawaii's public schools rank nationally today?" I don't know. Why don't you tell us? Please make sure to compare with other states that have major scientific facilities so we know you're making a fair comparison. RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - Guest - 09-03-2017 PaulW, mahalo. Hawaii's public school teachers did not rank well recently. http://khon2.com/2016/09/26/analysis-hawaii-ranked-last-in-u-s-for-public-school-teachers/ I guess Hawaii's public schools don't rank much higher either. http://pen4rent.com/portfolio/why-does-50th-state-so-often-rank-no-50/ https://wallethub.com/edu/states-with-the-best-schools/5335/ Do we really need larger Telescopes for a better education system? RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - TomK - 09-03-2017 The TMT is an astronomical facility that, if built, will benefit everyone, both here and around the world. It was not planned by the Hawaii DOE to produce a better education system, although if it gets built here, that will be one of the benefits it'll bring. If it doesn't get built, there will be no benefits at all. I'm having a hard time understanding your argument. |
