TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo

Creating a new thread given the length of the others pertaining to TMT. I attended the hearing today, and was quite fortunate to have a seat, not as a "party to", but just as an observer.

Progress is being made, and thankfully, all parties requesting to be heard (who were there today), will be heard.

Retired Judge Riki May Amano on Friday approved requests by the Thirty Meter Telescope and the group Perpetuating Unique Educational Opportunities to be parties in the contested case hearing over the permit for the controversial telescope.


The venue was really too small, and Judge Amano was not pleased with the amount of people who were not able to attend this public hearing, and had to stand outside. There were over 100 people outside, waiting for some sort of update. There was no "live streaming", no "piped in audio", nothing. The last minute change to the State Building from the County Building was perhaps a poor decision. At least the County Building has speakers outside. I felt compassion for the Sheriff Dept. who handled the "last minute" situation respectfully. FWIW.

The next hearing will be held on August 5, 2016, at 10:00am; venue will be announced. Judge Amano asked if anyone had any objection to the UH Auditorium being the venue for the next meeting/hearing, and there were no objections.

HILO, Hawaii – The number of participants in the Thirty Meter Telescope contested case swelled to 24 parties, with the approval of hearing officer Judge Riki May Amano at a conference held in Hilo on Friday.

Over a hundred people – both supporters and opponents of the proposed $1.4 billion observatory planned for Mauna Kea – crammed into an inadequately-sized conference room at the old state courthouse building.

It was already very crowded in the meeting or hearing room by the time we got in there today. We did meet several nice people outside where we found a little room to let the kids run.

Met a couple from naalehu who were in good spirits and happy to share their feelings to why they were against the TmT project and the rest of the observatories. It was a bit sad to us because This couple were in their 80's or 90's sitting on the sidewalk in the heat at noon today. They were there for two hours until they needed a little help moving inside the building around noon( to hot for them ). We didn't stick around long enough to hear about anything that transpired in the hearing room.

Thank you for the update, Opihikao. I'm curious who made the decision to hold the hearing at the county building, that clearly wasn't forward thinking given how much interest there is in the topic, but what's done is done.

No matter what, I'm still not optimistic the TMT will end up in Hawaii, but the legal process will be interesting to watch. If I'm right, it will mean a lot of money and educational opportunities will vanish for local families, which will be sad, and an opportunity for local kids to better themselves lost forever.

dakine, were the historical events you describe above any different in Hawaii before Captain Cook? Or anywhere else in the world at any other time in history? Did you protest Kamehameha Day last week, because he's also an example of what you describe?
