Well, look at the astronomy capitol of the world's facilities and development in the past Fifty plus years it has been operating on our Mountain's summits. Then look at the Islands Public School facilities and there rankings year after year. Maybe our state could change their priorities a bit to better our education system for our keiki rather than investing in more foreign telescope tourism. jmo

The state isn't investing anything in the telescopes, the money comes from elsewhere and gets spent here.

Well then allow all the telescopes on Mauna Kea including the TMT's project to be decommissioned by the year 2033. Have the land returned to it's original state like once promised. Then the Hawaiians could decide how best they would like to utilize or again lease their returned lands at a true market price. Maybe the limited water, electricity, housing, resorts, restaurants and roads would all be cheaper for the next 75 years. jmo's

The telescopes provide tax revenue, directly and indirectly. Removing them will worsen the funding base of all public services.

The astronomy capitol of the world and their many lower facilities in Wiamea and Hilo use millions of dollars worth of electricity and water a month. The hundreds if not thousands of foreigners working for the Telescopes rent the limited housing for more money than it's worth to locals. The area roads including Mauna Kea's Summit road are used by hundreds of vehicles driven by Telescope visiting tourists and employee's every day. This creates Widening, excess dust and pot holes that locals pay more in taxes every year.
With no telescopes for the millions of tourist to visit, maybe a few more Kama'Aina room rates would be available monthly. Maybe a slightly lower restaurant and grocery bill would come to the local folks. Many who work for the Telescopes don't invest or buy land and homes here on the big Island, They usually rent for higher prices than what locals can afford and bring their extra money saved back to the Foreign places they are originally from. Inter-Island Airline airfare may also be lower for local folks needing to see doctors and dentists with less telescope attracted tourists and their employees needing vacations all the time. jmo's
TomK, Do you own your home in HPP or simply rent it from someone who lives on the Mainland?
Have you bought any other lands here on the Big Island over the past couple decades you have worked on the Telescopes?
Did any of your Children go to these Island public schools or buy a home here on the Big Island?

Have you found 1960, before the telescopes were built, the year when Hawaii students had the highest grades and graduation rates? If not, what year was it? Please show us your research and findings on this subject.

Many of The unemployed and section 8 people you mention are born-n-raised local folks, as is the Majority of the growing homeless population. One big difference is The local folks from here have very few options of places or nowhere to go from here. While The thousands of foreigners moving to Hawaii these days could afford to move anywhere in the world.
HOTPE, Our local Pahoa elementary and High school facilities have been around for over 100 years. My kids went to the same classrooms for school as my wife and I did, even had many of the same teachers. Lower Puna's population has been growing over the years while Ormat's Geothermal, B&B's, Malama market and many others have profited largely. How long will this area of Puna have to wait for a Hospital, alternate road to Hilo, drug treatment center or new Pahoa public school facility for our keiki?
