don't think the TMT partners are that interested in funding the sociological fields

Correct -- this research would not be TMT-funded, it's a byproduct -- and the way things are going, it might be the only TMT-related scientific research we get in the US of A.

So the judge remains in place, at least for the time being.

Flip Flops - 1
Ivy League Economist - 0

A dark skinned man on an airline flight was working intently on some strange Arabic looking calculations. "Was he a Muslim terrorist trying to blow up the plane?" wondered his casual flip flop wearing seatmate. She informed the flight crew.

The plane was first delayed, then returned to the gate, where the culprit turned out to be an award winning economist and university professor working on a differential equation. He bought his ticket not to blow up the plane, but to give a speech at a University about a paper he authored. He was not Middle Eastern, or even Muslim, he was Italian.

This incident reminded me of the TMT protests last summer, where a few misinformed people created their own personal explanations about a telescope and it's applications*, spread those false scenarios to others, and caused a lot of trouble for a lot of people who were just trying to mind their own business.

* Military applications, death lasers, watershed pollution, etc, etc, etc...

I fly American Airlines all the time. I'll have to make sure I don't read research papers on my next flight, or make notes. How ridiculous.

It's still okay to do these things if your skin isn't brown -- any kind, apparently all shades of brown are suspect nowadays. "Land of the free, home of the brave" right?

What is all this fuss about? The TMT, as well as any mirrored telescope, is an obsolete technology.

FWIW, I trust Judge Amano will do her best in her capacity. She is no slouch, and is quite astute. Takes no crap either. (*Disclaimer: Judge Amano handled a few cases I watched/was involved in. Opinion based on personal experience only.)

As an aside, frankly, TMT should be allowed at the hearing due to their investment thus far. It may alleviate some of the potential lawsuits this State faces if the permit is never awarded (again).

BLNR/State of Hawaii/UH all are responsible for this debacle. The protectors/protesters are not the core/root of the problem; evidenced by the Supreme Court ruling.

Yes, again, JMO.

Update, FYI: (Washington Times, no less... Snipped - More at link)

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/may/11/tmt-hearing-officer-schedules-1st-meeting-with-law/

HONOLULU (AP) - The hearing officer overseeing a contested case hearing for the Thirty Meter Telescope’s construction permit is asking lawyers in the case to meet with her next week.

Riki May Amano set the conference for Monday in Honolulu, but said it may be moved to Hilo if there are objections. She called it a “pre-hearing conference,” and promised attorneys it would be a short lunchtime meeting to discuss matters including a schedule for filing motions, procedures and logistics.

It was also reported on local news that the hearing would be open to the public, per Judge Amano. (*No link yet, sorry.)

This is progress.

JMO.

"The whole island is sacred and Mauna Kea is part of it," Warfield said. "All land is sacred in Hawaii. It’s not just one particular spot."

I was wondering when someone would point this out...
