Before one telescope is really decommissioned from the summit of Mauna Kea another two telescopes become permanent. These kind of additional projects are why over 20 telescopes and not 13 are sitting on Mauna Kea's summit. If the TMT project is allowed to be built then there may be several additional smaller telescope projects to follow, as long as it's on the TMT property. jmo

P.S. Let's also hope the expected decommissioning process of the telescope does not start before the "public scoping period" Jan. 15th 2018. The gentleman in this recent video seems to think the decommissioning may begin as early as next week.

Here is an interesting explanation from an astronomer of how we may have got to this point.

At least for sensitivity reasons the TMT project sponsors changed the name of the telescope from the original name of "GOD" to the "TMT". jmo

hope the expected decommissioning process of the telescope does not start before

"We will fight to the death to protect our sacred lands ... and that goes double if you dare to try removing your desecration..."

Just to clarify, the TMT was never named GOD. Consider the source of that claim.

TomK, top of the morning to you sir. I am not sure what you mean by consider the source. The astronomer giving the TMT related presentation in that last link I provided above is the source I learned it from. In case you missed it TomK here is the link again. The god nickname for the telescope was being used in the mid 90's, you can hear this astronomer say this at the 45:37 mark of this video.

These are always fun clips to watch as well.

P.S. Where can I find a few of those POP the PIMPLE's on Mauna Kea T-shirts or sweat shirts?

How about, for sensitivity reasons, explain what the "GOD" acronym supposedly stood for. You really expect visitors here to watch a 57 minute video in order to find out? Until then, I won't even entertain the idea that your claim is true.

RE: TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo - Eric1600 - 12-07-2017

Gypsy it sure didn't take you long to propagate the nonsense about the "addition of 2 more telescopes". You realize these are tiny and are just siting on top of a space already built? Of course you don't care that they are the same size as some of the telescopes used by tourists at the Stary Night shows. Here look for yourself: https://hatnet.org/static/images/hatnet-flwo-scopedetail.jpg

So using your same warped logic we better count every lens as a telescope! Cell phones be damned! Count everyone who takes a photo as an astronomer! So much desecration by all those evil astronomers!

For what it's worth, Durian, I watched the 57 minute video, and I don't know what Gypsy is talking about with this GOD stuff. I didn't find it in the video and it was also not in the transcript. I suspect he didn't watch it if that's all he got out of the video.

The most ironic thing about this is how Gypsy should be praising the innovation of the Hungarian Telescopes where they are able to use only 7 of these around the world to detect exo-planet transits of their systems suns. They have found about 60 new ones using just these small foot print telescopes. Now in general there's no making up for size when it comes to telescopes, but, Gypsy shouldn't be bashing them for what they were able to do with such small equipment that requires ZERO construction, ZERO on-site staff and ZERO waste. But no.

The concept of the TMT only began after a report in 2001 and the TMT corporation was formed in 2003. It was never named GOD.

ETA: I looked up the author of the video Gypsy posted via the NASA ADS abstract system; Salman Hameed. Very interesting. I'll leave it for Gypsy to explain since he brought it up in the first place.

TomK, good morning to you sir.

I am again not sure what your babbling Gibberish is all about this morning. I also looked up the author and found this:

https://www.hampshire.edu/faculty/salman-hameed

Forgive me if i'm wrong here but I see an awful lot of similarities between Salmon and You TomK. He seems to be an astronomer doing many of the same things as yourself for a living. He also is a well educated foreigner from an outside country with interests much like yourself.

What am I missing TomK?

I see Salmon is Muslim much like 15-20% of India's population, India is a large partner in the TMT project.
At this point in time My guess is that there are more Muslim astronomers than Hawaiian astronomers. Another guess here, When the TMT project is operational There may be more Muslim, Canadian, Chinese, Japanese, and Hindu astronomers working at the TMT than Hawaiian. jmo's

From that link:

"This course can be summed up as: everything you wanted to know about aliens but were afraid to ask (a scientist). The course will explore the topic of extraterrestrial intelligence from the perspective of several different fields. We will look at the history of UFO sighting claims and analyze the reliability of eye-witness testimonies, explore psychological & sociological reasons behind claims of alien abductions, and analyze the current state of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) from the perspective of astronomy and planetary research. We will also examine how film and television have shaped our view of aliens in popular culture. We will conclude the course by looking at religions that have been inspired by UFOs and extraterrestrials"

Or:

"Do you have an idea for a science fiction story? Can it be developed into a short film? In this course students will develop science fiction short films that have a basis in scientific ideas from the fields of biology, astronomy, physics, or scientific ethics. Students are expected to work in small groups towards a goal of producing short films and writing an individual paper justifying the science used in their film. Students with some experience in science, film, or creative writing are welcome. Prerequisite: one science OR film OR creative writing course."

No, nothing like me. But I gave you a link to show what research he does and for some reason, you won't look it up. Now maybe you'll actually put two and two together, but think that's probably asking too much.
