There's an interesting article in the West Hawaii paper about Ho'okena. There were some racial attacks (the paper didn't use that terminology, but the article is clear that it was) at the campground. It takes 90 minutes for police to arrive. The security guard is there for permits the article says. He/she won't protect you.

I was looking for available dates for my favorite campground "Spencer's" only to find out for the first time ever they are sold out!(geeze this place is changing)...

Back in the day.... when I first moved here 20 years ago we camped at Spencer's for two weeks (without a permit)... ha ha .... the last night the ranger came by and told us we needed a permit.... we told him we were moving into our house in Waimea the next day! He said okay "no need"... Times do change huh? We (almost) hated living our beautiful warm morning swims for a house in Waimea!

RE: Campgrounds - jm minica - 06-13-2007

I rarely camp at the parks, because alot of the best camp spots are little out of the way places that most people dont even know are there. Facilities are nice, but I can do without them for a nice secluded camp site right on the ocean. I have heard nothing but good feedback on Kalopa. I lived at that park for a short period back in the late 80's when I got a job for Hamakua Sugar. It was primitive, but very beutiful back then. I'd love to check out the new facilities. Hey, maybe thats an idea for a Punaweb party. I hear the group facility can handle alot of people.
Aloha,
Mark
