I was looking for available dates for my favorite campground "Spencer's" only to find out for the first time ever they are sold out!(geeze this place is changing)
So I was wondering... if any of you have stayed at the other campgrounds? and if you could tell me about them. Thanks!

Punamom,

My favorite campground is Namakani Paio in volcano NP. Its right on the highway and you dont need a permit. If you are looking for a beach park there is one near spencers called Mahukona, not as nice but you can camp there. It is located north of Kawaihai about 13 miles. just past Lapakahi state park. Another one is called Kukainene in VNP no fires but really nice. Good luck!

Spensers is just west of Waimea, on the Kohala coast, near Hapuna Beach
I also noticed that most of the campgrounds were fuller this summer, maybe just due to the shorter summer vacation for the school kids.

Ho'okena, great place near Kealakekua, they have facilities, but not the over zealous "security" wanabe guards like spencer

We did'nt like the over zealous security wanabes at Spencer or the hard scrabble rock camping areas or the dubious conditions of the restrooms.By the time the security woman in the golf cart finally finished telling us all the do's and dont's (well really it was all don'ts) it was bedtime and we knew we didn't want to stay there another night. She even surprised us with a ultimatum that checkout time was 8 AM as "tommorrow was a maintenance day" we wondered what their idea of maintenance is !!!

Green, that's pretty funny...last November I camped at Spencer the night before a "maintenance day" as well. Same deal with the golf cart lady - but in the morning she was back around 6:30 AM telling everyone to pack up and go asap because there had been an earthquake off the coast of Japan and could be a tsunami. It was pretty crazy then... People were throwing their half-dissasembled tents into their cars, screaming at their kids and flying out of the parking lot. Turns out there was never a tsunami warning...I guess it's good to be safe though, and I was definitely ready to leave. The fact that everyone has to pitch their tents all close together right there in the open area in front of the bathrooms (with the bright lights on all night)made me feel like I was at a chaperoned girl scout camping trip. Too bad the County parks don't provide a better camping experience.

It's amazing to me that there is all these exotic hotels, hotel beaches and landscaped hotel areas in Kahala with exotic prices. Then there are these crummy county parks, where do all the taxes go for those expensive hotel rooms? Certainly not into any of the public parks. To me it's sad that the same people that work at those hotels mostly can't afford to live on that side or even stay in one of those rooms. When they want to camp they have to reserve in advance for what I would consider a substandard campground with so many rules that they make you want to choke !!!!

Just returned from Kalopa Park yesterdday. located in Honoka'a area. Upland a bit. There are cabins there that have 8 bunks and a in cabin bath room. The is electricy in the cabin. It cost $55. a niight. There is a community Kitchen with large refrig to keep/prepare food. Mess hall connected to kitchen. Bathrooms in the same building. There is a BBQ area (A pavillion, grill, and more bathrooms). Well maintained. The Park manager
is pleasant and keeps the place in good shape.
The best park we've been to in Hawaii.
Has tent camp area also.

Aloha
Wyatt
