I agree with rainyjim. probably cheaper to add the chain link. also just my opinion but a 6 foot high rock wall does block a lot of light and gives a home a kind of fortress appearance from the street.

Personally I think it is terrible to top a nice rock wall with chain link. Chain link is really tacky. JMHO

Our house came with a low rock wall with 4 tall pillars at the 2 gates and is topped with chain link fence. It was an affordable solution for the original owners to the problem of uneven ground and the need to contain small dogs. Personally I think it looks fine, especially with flowering vines growing on it. I don't know many people who can afford $75 a linear foot on a 135 foot wide lot, even with 2 gates, that would come to around $7500. Tall walls at the property line do make for a fortress feel, when I see those new houses with the big walls up front I always wonder how the owners will ever get to know their neighbors.

I agree with Rob. Its something I would never do, just mentioned because a lot seem to utilize the method - however - Maybe consider it if you wanted to grow a "green screen" to make the top fence opaque.

I suppose this is as good a time as any to ask about this. I have hundreds of feet of old rock walls, that have lichen etc growing in them. Should I clean all of this out?

I agree that chain link looks tacky. BUT we bought a house with chain link fence and planted red jade vine on it. In 3 years, it was completely covered with vine and blooms spectacularly several times a year. I'd actually rather have this than rock!

While I agree with you esthetically, for people who have pools (but not catchment tanks), the chain link is required of at least 4' in height and can not be hog wire or rock wall included in the 4.
We just set a 20" rock wall and it will have 4' chain link set on it.
Building requirement. But not one I would choose to follow if I didnt have too.
