All the forecasts I read said it would hit late afternoon tonight, not last night.

My understanding is the highly variable sea temperatures make the middle of the Pacific hard to forecast. If you look at sea temperature models that show 6 months or a year of past temperatures the bands of color used to show temperature ranges in the Pacific are very "wiggly" to use an unscientific term, while the bands in the Atlantic are "smoother" and tend to change more slowly based on the movement of the Gulf stream.

The mainland has weather monitoring stations all across the continent, from Alaska to Newfoundland. And continental weather is more predictable, with more historical data as well.

Until the not-so-distant past, Hawaii didn't even have satellite coverage because the government (justifiably so, IMHO) made sure the working weather satellite was placed where most of the US population lives. And there was only one for many years. It's only been the last few years that they've installed so many tsunami monitoring sites across the Pacific.

And islands are notoriously unpredictable weatherwise, ie England, Ireland, Hawaii...

After the rain we're getting today I am super glad I got all the mowing done yesterday!

I sat around all morning waiting for an opportunity to finish mowing my lawn.
I finally gave up and went out and started it anyway.
I had to take several rain breaks.
But, I did get it finished, or finished enough.
That poor lawnmower didn't like the thick, more than ankle deep, wet grass.
It choked and died a few times.
Maybe after the remnants of the storm pass, I can get started on pushing the the ferns back again.

LOL, 1voyager1, exactly. And I had green stained shoes after the soggy job.

Be glad for the rain. Here in CA my yard looks like the moon.
