Barack Obama RE: Favorite Movies! - AlohaSteven - 03-19-2009 Tough question; it would be easier if we listed movies by genre, but overall those I seem to end up watching repeatedly are... A Room With A View Fool Killer Goodbye, Mr. Chips (O'Toole/Clarke version) Brother Sun, Sister Moon 2001: A Space Odyssey Romeo and Juliet (Franco Zeffereli) Map of the Human Heart Fifth Element Groundhog Day Madame Curie GATTACA The Story of Louis Pasteur The Story of Alexander Graham Bell LOTR (Lord of the Rings trilogy -I am still surprised they adapted the books so well) It's A Wonderful Life (every Winter Solstice: as much a family tradition with my lot as wassail and eggnog!) ...and all of Sabu's old films (Jungle Book, Elephant Boy, Black Narcissus, Drums, and so on) -plus- (they are TV serials but I watch them on DVD, except for the newest episodes of LOST) House LOST Rome That 70's Show By the way, for genuine movie buffs I recommend signing up with Bruce Hershenson's online movie club. At http://www.emovieposter.com/ go to "Misc" in the pull-down menu and select "E-Mail Club" to sign up ...or maybe this link will take you there direct: http://www.emovieposter.com/club/archive.php?myfrom=menu Bruce conducts polls on various film questions and by reading the comments section of the polls I have found all sorts of great movies that I would have otherwise missed. It is worth going through the archives. Also, he gives away a completely FREE set of his outstanding movie poster art books to several club members every week or two (I have won a set and these picture-books are fantastic!) Also, for anyone else who has become caught up by the fascinating puzzle which is LOST, there is a cool online group discussing the story, theorizing about what may be behind it all, and speculating about where it all may be going at http://LOST-TV.tribe.net -one of my favorite hang-outs in cyberspace! )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( A pleasant slideshow: http://www.thejoymovie.com )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( RE: Favorite Movies! - centipede - 03-19-2009 Just about anything with copious amounts of sex, drugs, rock & roll, and violence, but what do these postings have to do with being Hawaii-specific??? RE: Favorite Movies! - AlohaSteven - 03-19-2009 Q: what do these postings have to do with being Hawaii-specific??? A: Those who are replying constructively in this thread are part of the Puna community; as such, this sharing allows us to better connect with one another and so to share potential interests and resources with one another. Plus which, I, for one, appreciate Menehune's gift of lightening the mood amidst an interesting point in our collective history by issuing this invitation to share favorite film narratives. Narratives of whatever sort (literary, oral, film, etc) are significant symbols of being, so sharing these reveals a great deal about those who have the courage and honesty (or naivete, depending upon one's degree of cynicism) to engage in a spirit of community and so to speak their truths. )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( A pleasant slideshow: http://www.thejoymovie.com )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( RE: Favorite Movies! - centipede - 03-19-2009 Sorry, I always thought people were already aware of every movie mentioned above. Because of this, I didn't bother listing my favorites, and because I'd be typing for the next few hours. RE: Favorite Movies! - AlohaSteven - 03-19-2009 Just about anything with copious amounts of sex, drugs, rock & roll, and violence...Sorry, I always thought people were already aware of every movie mentioned above. Because of this, I didn't bother listing my favorites, and because I'd be typing for the next few hours. Please, do esteem us with a list of specific titles significant to you, even just the top ten or so as others have done, if you can possibly spare the time. I am not being catty; I know which films I consider to contain "copious amounts of sex, drugs, rock & roll, and violence" but have discovered many others have a very different view of things, quite apart from my own. Violence, in particular, shows up very differently for one person and other. To some, for example, violence seems only to consist of physical brutality -whereas to others "violence" includes bullying in cyberspace, such as where the kindness and heartfelt sharing of others is denigrated and discounted as trivial or worthless. That, to me, is violence of a sort and as such is frankly quite repugnant. It is so much easier to tear down than to create, to hide and obscure than to reveal and share. Please, if you will accept this invitation, do step up to the plate as others here in this thread have done and share with us a list of those film titles significant enough to you to be worth your watching over and over again (even if such a list of ten titles or so takes a few hours to compile- are we not worth such an effort?) ...and in so doing reveal not only your honesty and strength of character but also to some extent your values, signifying yourself in this community via such self disclosure. )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( A pleasant slideshow: http://www.thejoymovie.com )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( RE: Favorite Movies! - cwoods61 - 03-19-2009 Not a favorite, but has anyone seen Black Widow, with Debra Winger? Was filmed in Puna. In fact, 90% of everything listed in this posting fits my criteria. One stipulation that I should have included is that the movies have a happy ending. For example, I enjoyed the first 2 "Alien" movies (hardly any sex, no drugs or rock and roll) but I HATED the last episode because it started with an unhappy note. Chick flicks are not my thing; nor was the graphic violence as depicted in the Passion of the Christ. I should also add that "Gunga Din" and "Network" are among my 2 favorite movies of all time. The sex was minimal, there was no rock and roll, the violence was sedate by today's standards, and it's up to the individual to decide whether "Gunga Din" had a happy ending. "Network" was a brilliant dark comedy and I take exception with the ending. Also included in my "top 10" are "Go" and "Charlie Wilson's War", both of which have all my requirements plus sort-of happy endings. Nuff said. |
