RE: UV water filters - StillHope - 03-27-2009 Thanks,HB, RE: UV water filters - Dot - 03-29-2009 We installed a UV filter system last fall on our place, first filter carbon, 2nd sediment, then the UV light that kills the bacteria (we're on water catchment). Bought it at WaterWorks in Hilo for approx $880, just bought new replacement filters last week, replacement filters were $50 total (even a girl can replace the filters). They are very helpful and friendly. I'm guessing you could buy the replacement filters at Home Depot or someplace, but I was too tired to shop around [] Good luck - Dot RE: UV water filters - StillHope - 03-29-2009 Thank you,Dot. What brand did you use? RE: UV water filters - jerry - 03-29-2009 A number of years ago I bought ours from Ohiopurewater.com and it was way less expensive. Currently their Sterilight S8QPA is $447.00 plus shipping. If you get extra bulbs (need to replace them every year) you are set for awhile. When planning the installation make sure to allow room to get the bulb out--I've seen a number of people mess that up. Jerry RE: UV water filters - Menehune - 03-29-2009 quote: Aloha - HiloBob! I was under the impression that the smallest "whole house" filter was 5 microns - that you lose too much pressure with 1 micron and that 1 micron could only be used at a faucet under the sink. If you do use a 1 micron "whole house" how much pressure do use lose in that most important facility - the SHOWER! Our pump/pressure tank package also includes a clear 10 inch filter. The replacement cartridges are about 2 dollars vs. the longer filters that cost a lot more to do the same thing. In fact we change our filter about every 6 months, as there really isn't a lot of particles in the well water. Daniel R Diamond RE: UV water filters - David M - 03-30-2009 I have a similar 10-5-1, three filter setup. These are the larger type cartridges, not the HD type. Additionally, I have first flush and filter before the tank. I just checked my pressure gauges - 39 lbs at the pump and 38 lbs house side of the 1 micron filter. These filters have been in serve about 1 1/2 years. I suspect I should change them, but am awaiting more degradation. I also have a small 100 micron filter ahead of the 10 micron that I service monthly, for algae. Very happy with our water. David Ninole Resident RE: UV water filters - StillHope - 03-30-2009 David, what brand and where did you get them? RE: UV water filters - David M - 03-30-2009 Not sure of brand, but got them from the ladies at Hawaii Catchment over at Shipman. These are a 20" filter. Can't see a brand name, just "Made in USA" markings. David Ninole Resident RE: UV water filters - Dot - 04-01-2009 Answer for StillHope, we used the Sterilite brand. They said to replace the sediment every 3 months, the carbon every 6 months, (or maybe it was the other way around)and the UV bulb once a year. The UV bulb has a handy little digital countdown counter on it that starts at 365 and counts down each day to let you know when your year is up. I asked about the filter changing schedule when I picked up the replacement filters, and the "unofficial" answer was, you will know you need to change them when you notice your water pressure dropping, they said it will be very noticeable when it's past time. They are pretty interesting systems,if you've ever peeked in your gutters after a few warm days without rain......yikes! Best wishes - Dot |
