L stands for liters (4 of them in a gallon) per minute of 20 degrees c heat rise
L-5- 5 liters a minute, L-10 ten liters (2 1/2 gal) of 20 degree C rise per minute max as the water flows across the heat exchanger

the L-5 in my opinion is set up for indoor use and the vent so designed. Read the manual
I added some sheet metal and 4 inch metal dryer vent pipe to my l-5 and fed it thru the roof to the outside just in case, the cabin being river rock and pretty air tight

I just setup the L5 on the exterior of the neighbors house.
They have 2 daughters going to school this year and no bathroom to speak of. After I find some tile, I'm going to install it inside the bathroom and I'd love to have a description or a pic of your install. The manual says to use it outdoors but if I vent it I can use it indoors.
As far as rating it, I'd say for the price and ease of installation it's the best darn water heater on the market. I don't know about longevity but for about $120 on overstock.com who really cares? I hooked it up for them in combination with the 12v water pump $100 at Amazon. The local retailers are asking WAY too much. I've hooked up 10 systems to date for peeps in our hood who don't have in the past 3 years and they've all gone great and absolutely no failure so far.

It's true that the flame goes out easily on the Eccotemp L5 when used in windy conditions.
The unit works best when hooked up in an area sheltered from the wind. Many people build some kind of outside shower stalls on the side of their house/cabin that consists of three walls and which helps in keeping that flame alive
Never use the Eccotemp inside your home or cabin because it works on propane.
