Frankenstorm!

RE: Hurricane season 2016 - TomK - 07-27-2016

A new tropical disturbance has formed in the east Pacific, 91E. It has a good chance of becoming a tropical system. Initial model tracks have it heading our way.

Updated models have 91E tracking north-west quite quickly, so hopefully this storm won't be a threat to us.

91E has now become tropical storm Howard. I'm not certain exactly when it became a named system or what time zone is used. If it became a named storm when it was still July, then it would break the record for the number of named storms in the Eastern Pacific in the month of July.

Models have it heading towards Hawaii but not becoming a hurricane and nearing Hawaii as a tropical depression or weaker. One or two models suggest it might restrengthen as it approaches, so worth keeping an eye on.

Howard was "born" 2 hours into August, no record.

I wonder how August will fare then! 92E is right behind Howard with 90% chance of becoming a named system (Ivette) in the next five days.

Interesting video on how Darby pretty much missed the east side of the Big Island and really clobbered Oahu. (Scroll down a bit to the video of Darby moving in to Hawaii.)

Thanks for the link, Cagary, it's interesting how the areas of convection and rainfall kept oscillating north and south of the storm's center.

92E has now become tropical depression Ten-E and is on a more southerly track compared to Howard's, so is travelling over warmer water. It's forecast to become a hurricane and the current track has it heading our way, do definitely one to watch.

I guess, like the horse race, everyone needed some kind of fancy Darby last week.

Happy it missed us here.

There are a couple of tropical systems in the eastern Pacific worth keeping an eye on; both have forecast tracks that suggest they'll head this way although they are still a long way away so a lot can change.

Tropical Storm Lester:

98E (not a tropical system yet, but an 80% chance of becoming one and currently in warm waters):

(That latter URL may change if the storm develops into a named system).
