If someone from the humane society sees it roaming free they won't care if it's "loved". For their safety and protection keep an eye on your pets!

She doesn't usually leave our yard. She just patrols the perimeter. She's micro-chipped, spayed, and heartworm protected. She's a pretty good dog. We take her in at night. If the humane society wants to waste their time picking up my dog out of my yard, then I'll go pick her up there after they check her chip and call me. Dogs are territorial by nature. Some dogs just stay at home- even without fencing or tie-outs. Now, obviously, the dog that bit this lady was "out of control" and is an entirely different case, but I was only pointing out that you can't really generalize about dogs.

If your dog disappears do not trust that the Humane society will properly check for the chip and call you. When one of our dogs got lost they told us to physically check every single day, that they do not always "get around" to checking for chips.

Guess we all show our love differently. Mine comes in the form of a large fenced-in area where my mutts can roam safely without putting themselves at risk. And even though both are good dogs, I don't let them run loose out of respect for my neighbors.
A couple weeks ago I saw a "loved dog" get hit by a truck while the poor little guy "freely roamed" across the road. Broke my heart.

all you folks that say your dog roams free and is loved ....so you think a free roaming dog is not loved , you never know what they are doing killing , cats, chickens a problem for fenced dogs, or confined dogs, going into private property , worse yet possibly being a nuisance to other residents and taken to the humane society , harmed by other dogs . that is why there is a leash law. how irresponsible as a pet owner to allow your beloved pet to Roam the neighborhood

I work with dogs in Brooklyn right now and I know what you mean but it really depends on the personality of the dog and the personality of the owners. I have broken up pit bulls who were attacking and I know that they can feel remorse and regret. You can tell that they know they did something really bad, some dogs that is. The other dogs that don't feel remorse are usually strays, dogs who get little or no human contact and/or dogs that have been severely abused. Anyway , it is too difficult to figure out what kind of owners and how the dog feels about it in this situation.
I just get so pissed to hear about this stuff because this dog will probably be killed due to the negligence of it's owners. Dogs are usually trying to please who ever they feel is alpha in their life. So this dog was probably doing what it thought was its job. This is due to something wrong that the owner is doing.There should be jail time or a serious fine for this type of thing so people take dog ownership a little more serious.
It's like open carrying a gun and having it discharge into some innocent by standards arm. Someone needs to be held accountable.
