It was never clear to me if the coast guard's 300-meter restriction applied to lava tour boats with permits and/or to other boats. Having said that, the ocean entries are apparently not very active at the moment, but then there is always the risk of a bench collapse. I don't know how likely that is right now at the entries.

who wants to be 3 hundred yards away?

RE: Lavaboat tours - randomq - 05-29-2018

Personally I want to be close enough to touch the lava with a stick, but my old lady won't have it.

Don't poke Pele with a stick, you might make her mad.

It's not Ikaika's boat. He's taken a few people out that have a connection with the area, but is not doing any tours for profit. Besides, he's way to busy coordinating relief efforts in Pahoa.

Hopefully Shane has learned more respect for the local waters and won't run out of fuel or expose customers to harmful gasses like he's done previously.

Based on the video floating on social media, someone was at Shanes house filming Madame Pele taking her cut in the profits...

While on a cruise of the Hawaiian Islands years ago, perhaps 1991 we saw an awesome sight. The captain of the ship announced over the loud speaker around 11PM for those interested in seeing the lava flow step outside to the port side. We saw lava flowing into the ocean and these huge pink/peach clouds climbing into the sky. I was so ill at ease as we were in a large ship and it felt like we were much much to close to the shore. I was afraid we were going to scrape the bottom. One night at dinner at the captains table I asked about this and learned that the ocean is so deep off that coast there was no fear we would touch the bottom. The earth birthing the land we will never forget that sight.

Mariners: A permanent safety zone was established on May 11, 2018, and encompasses all waters extending 300
meters (984 feet) in all directions around all entry points of lava into the ocean. The entry points of the lava vary, and
the zone will vary accordingly. Questions, comments, and concerns related to submitting request to enter the Lava
Safety Zone, please call the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center at (808) 842-2600

Sounds like leilanidude has a grudge or something? Ever consider that he has requested permissions according to the procedures established by the coastguard last year?

P.S. Mahlo to Shane for rescuing our friend from Pohiki when he lost everything to the lava in Kapoho

RE: Lavaboat tours - TomK - 06-10-2018

This was on the news a week ago so sorry I can't find the link right now, but the 300-meter exclusion zone does not apply to tour boats with the proper permits.
