I just took a quick look at Blogger -- while I personally don't think it has some of the features of WordPress (I do use a customized version of WordPress, so I could be off-base), but its definitely easy to use.

For Carol:
1) Easy to use -- both are easy. Right now, I would categorize WordPress as "easy" and Blogger as "ridiculously easy".
2) Able to post assignments, reminders, etc on a "class by class" basis (using Categories or something similar -- both do this well.
3) Ability for students to ask questions and Carol to respond -- both do this well. I haven't dug into the privacy stuff to see which would be better for students to be able to post "private" questions that only Carol could see though.

I think either one could serve as a good starting point for Carol to start having greater online interaction with her students. Again, my preference is for WordPress but for a super-simple solution to try out and see how blogging could be useful in the classroom, you would have a good and easy time with Blogger. Either one will let you post syllabi, assignments, reminders, etc and organize them by class.

If you later found that WordPress had some options that you would like, migrating from Blogger to WordPress is a breeze. And I would imagine that the other way around should work as well (check with Blogger to be sure though).

Thanks for all the input everyone. Whatever I do will be strictly for use by my students and their parents as a convenient way to share information about assignments in my classes and to show student work to their families, so I am afraid none of you will ever get to see it, unless I have your kid in my classes.

I feel very strongly about protecting the privacy of my students, even though they often don't know enough yet to care themselves. I just read an article about a twenty something candidate whose election bid was shot down when pictures from his MySpace page were selectively cropped and used to smear him. And we bought a computer from a political science major one time that had a whole bunch of pictures on it which would sink any future career (especially the one of him drunk in a fountain in his underwear groping REALLY young looking two girls). I regularly remind my students that future colleges, employers and now parents of the person they want to date, are doing internet checks to evaluate people. If you wouldn't want your Grandmother to see it don't post it, is my motto!
