A cyber space how to question
#1
As I am winding down this school year I have resolved to get all my class assignments and related information online next year. I am pretty comfortable using technology, but I have never created a webpage or a blog. What I want is a place where I can post homework assignments, syllabi, project descriptions, and other related stuff for 6 different classes each term. I would love to be able to post grades on assignments and missing work logs, with student ID numbers so only students and parents know who is who. A comment area for each class would be great too.

What would be the best vehicle for doing this? I need it to be simple and fast to set up and maintain (free or really cheap too), at least some areas if not all need to be closed to outsiders, and many of our families are on dial up so it needs to load fast. I also need each class to be a separate area to avoid confusion. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Mahalo.

I like weebly, I'm pretty sure damon likes Wordpress. Both have the option of assigning passwords so that only your students can access a site.

Weebly is free and so easy that even I can operate their software. Wordpress is so easy that even Damon can do it ! [Wink]

With either one you can set them up and work them for awhile to get a better feel before you go "public" and announce the site.

Or maybe you could have one of your students do it for you. (ha ha joke)

Carol...

You can use wordpress. If you need help... I can assist.

If you are at a public school... you will have to email NSSB to have your blog accessible on the DOE servers...(mine is despite youtube etc.)

Believe it or not... almost every teacher at Kamehameha campus k-12 has a publicly accessible blog where they post pictures of their students etc. I'll let you find the blogs.

You can password protect posts that you want only available to those you want to see it...etc.

Dial up is a problem... however... if you don't have a site that uses a lot of graphics... and it's mostly text then it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a blog on the FBI Site that is run through a dial-up server in Puna.

It can be done... and for free.

damontucker @ yahoo.com

I've mentioned previously on Punaweb that I will help almost anyone setting up a blog that I would help.

But then again... are bloggers necessary?

I guess I have to give a plug to Blogger (http://www.blogger.com/). Same capabilities as both Weebly and Wordpress. Blogger is owned by Google and can be as public or private as needed. Happy to help if you have questions blakeyboy1@gmail.com. Way to embrace technology and make it work for you dude!

I was posting my message when I missed Gregs dig at wordpress... or was that at ME!

In all seriousness though... I believe Wordpress is just as easy as posting to Punaweb...

Heck... even easier...they give you the tools to play with and teach you how to use them. Punaweb you have to figure this stuff out on your own...

Unless Rob Tucker gets on the bandwagon and set's up a punaweb tutorial besides the FAQ's...

Teasing Rob!

I would have to vote for WordPress too. I use it and love it and you can get a free account (with a good mix of features) at WordPress.com.

Thanks guys,
I will probably refloat this thread with very specific questions when I get ready to set things up in July. It seems like everyone thinks blogs are the way to go, is that just a statistical quirk because everyone who answered has blogs, or is it really the best way to go here? Damon, I am in a charter school so our access to services from the DOE is non existent, this will all be me on my own. Charter school funding just got dropped to the level of 5 years ago by legislature too! Mahalos all around.

my suggestion about wordpress blogs stands.

It's pretty much a "wysiwyg" (What You See Is What You Get) platform that allows you to see your post w/out having to deal w/ a lot of HTML formatting.

I suggest setting up a practice blog and playing around with it for awhile before you try and get one that you want to be well read.

It's free and there is nothing to lose by practicing.

You can simply go to wordpress.com and it's pretty self explanatory. Like I said earlier... if you can post to PW... you can make and create a blog.

If you want to get real fancy with the blog... then of course you need to practice a bit in adding pictures, movies, audio files, slideshows, powerpoints and other things that you may want to include on your blog.

I suggest doing that a bit before attempting to do it in July on a site that you don't want published... just a mere practice site...

Call it anything you want and simply practice for awhile. When you feel a bit more comfortable... you can simply delete the account or keep it open to practice other things that you may want to try on your blog that is more public.

I have 6 blogs right now. I'm only real active with a few of them.

I'm not sure how much bandwidth you have available at your charter school... if you are using dial up... you may want to just stick with a Text type of a blog.

I do have one blogger on the FBI Site that does upload his blog postings via Dial-up, and he says it is a bit time consuming to do on a dial-up modem.

The best part about wordpress... is their free customer service.

I'm often doing stuff on my blog that is kind of different then mainstream blogs.

If I can't figure out the coding for it... I simply submit a question into their tech support.

Typically, within 24 hours the problem is solved.

In fact, one time I told them what I was trying to do with my blog... I gave them the URL... and the next time I checked my blog... THEY had done it for me!

All the customer service they have provided has been free and done over email.

Don't ask us punatics about your blog when it comes to technical things...

But you can ask us about things we might like to see on a blog by your class.

If you want to see just a quick run down of some of the basic features that will probably interest you the most about wordpress, check out this link:

http://en.wordpress.com/features/

And like someone said earlier... if you can't figure something out... I'm sure one of your students can. [Wink]
