State Sen. Russell Ruderman:
Ruderman also brought up social media chatter about possible looting in the evacuated areas.
“It’s very hard to know how real or widespread it is. That’s kind of an interesting situation,” he said. “Certainly, some of the people who are going back in today are going to stay there. They’re not going to evacuate. It’s not going to be safe, but they have to defend themselves, not just against the (sulfur dioxide), but against looters.
“I’m concerned about that situation. I hope the National Guard will decide to patrol the evacuated area. … Then, there’s going to be the vigilante response. … These are extreme conditions with extreme stress, and people feel that their whole livelihood is under attack, and they’re going to overreact, in some cases.”

The Hawaii Adjutant general FB page says that there have been reports during PREVIOUS EVENTS of people dressing in camo, impersonating national guard soldiers, telling people to evacuate, and then looting the homes.
The Adjutant General advises that real national guard will be driving military vehicles and will be able to produce military ID when requested.

Second of third hand, yes. ON a local Facebook page, someone said a couple they knew got the okay to drive to their home in Leilani to retrieve some things, and found their door kicked in and the place ransacked.

Here is the complete FB post from the Hawaii Adjunct General:
The Hawaii National Guard has been activated by Governor David Ige in support of Hawaii County Civil Defense and their emergency management efforts. Some of our Soldiers and Airmen will be providing security in the Puna area of Hawaii Island in response to the recent volcanic activity. Please see the below statement:
"The Hawaii National Guard, both the Army and Air, has been activated and is supporting Hawaii County emergency personnel. The Guardsmen will be in full uniform and using military tactical vehicles as they patrol and assist with evacuation and security in Puna. There have been reports during previous events about civilians wearing camouflage and impersonating military members in order to gain access to homes that have been evacuated. The Hawaii National Guard would like the public to know that our Soldiers and Airmen will be in military vehicles and carrying their military IDs. At any time, if there is a question about whether or not a person is with the Hawaii National Guard, look for their vehicle and ask to see their military ID."
