RE: why do we live(or come)here? - ric - 01-10-2010 A little sensitive, huh, Island? Your postings are as hostile as I've ever seen on PW. Since you keep going on and on with your incessant rants, I would suggest that the reason that your neighbors don't bother to put any energy into a response is because they already know it's a waste of time. So they just agree with you to shut you up. The PWer's here have given you the benefit of the doubt and you have been nothing but abusive with your postings. I should also mention that you could use a little help with your grammar and punctuation, granted we are online and people are a bit relaxed, but your posts are nearly impossible to read. RE: why do we live(or come)here? - islandlvng - 01-10-2010 oh and if my house doesnt sell, i'll still be doing the same thing here. working with flowers and surfing just like ive been doing for years. Helping my neighbors out and staying alert in my neighborhood picking up trash ect.... being apart of this island which ive been apart of for so long. Ill for sure keep my concerns face to face with my local area people, fellow surfers ect. no more of this back and forth with sit at home glued to the computer with 1000 posts puna web'rs. See ya at the beach. Probably not lol. No computer access RE: why do we live(or come)here? - islandlvng - 01-10-2010 What's sad is the fact that I would've hoped for responses to my question like The sunrise over MaunaKea, The sunsets in Kona. Hearing whale songs underwater at Hapuna. Hiking waipio for days. Sometimes when you live in a place for a long time you forget these kinds of things or become immune. Or how about the great fresh produce from the farmers market? Instead, people get offended? Glen was the only one to make an effort. I was immediately told I had offended someone. Period. It could've been a productive way to show me others point of views for living here and instead it was a slam show on my grammer. C'mon. Let's get petty shall we? Sorry I don't spend enough time on the keyboard for you folks to understand this. Or that my opening question was in some way jibberish. It sure got enough responses quickly though. Any other faults to point out while we're at it? Very amusing. Susan RE: why do we live(or come)here? - TomK - 01-10-2010 I might be in the minority here, but I moved here because of my job (astronomy). I grew up in the UK and lived there for nearly 30 years before moving here so might have a slightly different perspective to most on punaweb. Firstly, Mauna Kea is just about the best place on the planet to do astronomy and the views of the sunsets and sunrises are so beautiful that almost they alone keep me here. There is more though. Few places in the world allow you to be in arctic conditions one moment and less than two hours later in a hot desert, tropical rainforest or sunbathing on the beach and snorkeling in warm water. Then add an active volcano which you can actually go and visit and take in some of the most amazing scenery anywhere. The place is so green as well. I remember my first trip back to the UK probably about a year after I moved here and for the first time noticing how I was in the middle of a concrete jungle whereas here there is so much space and natural greenery. I like the general quietness of the place, the laid-back lifestyle and on the whole a very friendly group of people - I have never lived in a place before where you can drive around the local neighbourhood and people wave to you, drivers and pedestrians, that I don't know and often have never seen before. I have good neighbours, we watch out for each other and very little, if any, crime. I used to love the commute to and from work, it wasn't rushed, people drove slower than anywhere I've lived before and were generally polite and thoughtful. This is changing for the worse unfortunately but compared to my commutes in the UK it is still so much better here. I like the way people greet you when you enter a shop and say "bye" or "have a nice evening" when I leave. I know it may not always be genuine, but they make the effort. I find that I can have a friendly conversation with just about anyone here even if I don't know them and the diversity in people's backgrounds here always fascinates me. And I even like the tourists! There are certainly some downsides to living here but for me they come nowhere near to outweighing the good things. For some the island will not be to their liking. I know some people from the UK have moved here and wanted to go home almost immediately because they missed some of the things the UK could offer, theatre, opera, pubs, public transport, you might even say civilisation. Sometimes I miss those things as well but on the whole this is a beautiful place. Tom RE: why do we live(or come)here? - Greg - 01-10-2010 Islandleaving, I'll post my original response here again. I don't think it's mean spitited or even critical, and it addresses most of your concerns and questions. Maybe you missed it earlier. ___________________________________________________________________ I grew up all over the country. My dad was in medical equipment sales with GE and kept getting new territory. The first major move I was deeply affected by was from SoCal to Milwaukee when I was starting high school. I had my first surfboard and girlfriend. What I realized with that move was that kids have fun wherever they are. I had a blast in Wisconsin. Two years later, Charlotte. Had a blast! Denver, Brookfield, Boone, Vietnam (blast was literal), New Orleans, San Pedro, DC, San Luis Obispo, Tallahassee, Avalon; Had a blast. All of these places had the bad along with the good; But none of them had Left Point, Drainpipes, Second Bay, Bowls, Makalawena, or 69's. None of them had 80 degree water. I've been here twenty three years and have a goal of getting in the water at least twice a week. I'm not going anywhere. I've never had a bad experience with racism, but didn't on the mainland either. Sure things have changed, but the rest of the world isn't as pristine as it once was either. I really wish you the best, but I'm not confident that you're going to be any happier anywhere else. Only you can determine the quality of life you enjoy. Stoneface RE: why do we live(or come)here? - Dave M - 01-10-2010 islandlivng How can you blast Tomk above? There's hundreds of stories like that here man.. Neil Young RE: why do we live(or come)here? - mella l - 01-10-2010 Someone very wise once told me, "It isn't where you live it is how you live that makes a good life". I was lucky that I was young when I heard this message. It is tough in a lot of places right now and the more we try to encourage and help each other out, look to the future and better times, well the better off we will all be. mella l "New York London Paris Hilo" PS edited to add that the Moon over Hilo Bay is spectacular, the sun rising over the east is lovely, the ocean is beautiful also, but day to day people are making a living, not a vacation. It is what it is. RE: why do we live(or come)here? - mdd7000 - 01-10-2010 quote:Nicely put. This forum is comprised almost entirely of transplants (including me) and the results you get reflect that. If someone doesn't like what you have to say, you get personally attacked, slammed for your grammar and punctuation or ridiculed for your position on the topic of the day. There seems to be less than 5% real locals on this forum. Another 20%+ don't even live here yet vocally post away on issues even though they will not be voting and have no real impact on Puna's future. Most real locals are doing what you describe - being at the beach, hiking, being outside. RE: why do we live(or come)here? - kani-lehua - 01-10-2010 a great and wise message indeed, mella! kahikina nani o ka la.........the beautiful sun rising from the east. we're not able to see the sunrise from up here in the forest. but, get a glimpse of it as it filters through the ohia trees. lucky we live hawai'i!
