Thank you for your post and opinion, much appreciated. However:

I suspect it's now a case of too little too late. Given the TMT now plan to make a decision about their future site in early 2017, I seriously doubt we'll even get to the point where we see if Ige gets it.

Oh, it's easy to be suspicious, after the incompetence. However the schedule allows for it, and "the word" is that the site is so preferable so as to allow the TMT Board to provide some leeway to their stated schedule should it be required.
I think they're currently doing the right thing; the circulating of their project and the vetting of their options. At the end of the day it's in the State of Hawaiis hands....and for this they will be judged.

Well, we'll see, but the recent announcement that the TMT's own deadline has moved to early 2017 has caught the astronomy community by surprise. Neither you or I are privy to what's being discussed by the TMT board (well, maybe you are?), but given this latest news, I would be surprised if they stay here.

I'm certainly not privy to the actual Board discussions, only what their rep relates to involved community leaders. They now seem quite cognizant of the way things operate here, hopefully including how best to effect their goals.

Sorry, I haven't been keeping up. WRT the TMT moving their own deadline to 2017, is that moving it up or pushing it later? They had previously stated that they needed the go-ahead by this September, right? Are they giving the state more time?

At one point TMT wanted permits issued by September even if they were still being contested, so long as those challenges were resolved in time for a Spring 2017 groundbreaking.

I like the imagery, but unfortunately our best work is not always accomplished under the yoke, or in deep water, even above the scaffold. Focused or not. Perhaps, if politicians would have a reminder from day one that the office they hold demands they execute (in a manner of speaking) certain responsibilities in a timely fashion, preferably not just when duress drives them to an act of desperation.
I'd like to suggest we award all state and county officials a small desk model of a noose during their swearing in ceremonies, to act as a figurative reminder for their days* in office as a public servant.
* And those days are always numbered to some extent, aren't they? Whatever the situation, as it is for us all.

They're giving the state less time. Originally, the TMT wanted assurances from the state by September 2017 with the idea of starting construction in April 2018, e.g.,
