RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - Kelena - 05-07-2012 Yes, it is good to have a gun to shoot loose dogs and pigs, but how many do you need? Ten? And do you write of them lovingly as if they were pets, rather than cold, hard steel? RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - missydog1 - 05-07-2012 It's not about guns, the big category. It's the type of guns. I went rural in 1969, 43 years ago. It is not new to me. I've lived in places that were way more outlaw than Puna. I'm not anti hunter. The hunters come by our property and deal with the pigs. (they choose snares as their first approach). My husband learned to trap in the Ozarks when he was 8, and was putting dinner on the table, and hunts and fishes. I'm not rabidly anti. I personally don't like to kill things, but I get the hunting mentality. But this fortress mentality is wearing on me. That's not How Hawaii needs to be. We have less guns and less crime. I like it that way. Why change? RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - jackson - 05-07-2012 rbrgs, please read the entire Wikipedia offering, all the way to the bottom. The NRA and other gun ownerships groups have funded many "studies" trying to support this claim. As Kathy states, I am neither afraid of guns or do I oppose them for hunting. Like her, I also do not like killing anything, perhaps to more of an extreme, but I also realize that I live in the real world and I accept what I can't change. However, I have not only been shot, but I have seen the effects of gun violence first hand. The fact is that most people who carry become targets and are unable to achieve their weapon in time when attacked. The criminal winds up with the gun. And to all you macho gun types - until you have shot and killed someone who was doing nothing more than robbing you of a few posessions, you have a great deal of ignorance on the harm you will cause yourself emotionally. There are many non lethal ways to protect yourself and your property. The logic of more guns, less violence is well beyond absurd. RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - oink - 05-08-2012 Still some entertainment value here. quote:Yes, both pro and anti gun groups fund "studies". IMHO most of the pro studies shake out with more validity when looked at closely and held up against the opposing "studies" point by point. quote:Both you and Kathy are entitled to your opinions, as is everyone. quote:I haven't been shot but yes I have seen the effects of gun violence, and knife violence and broken bottle violence, baseball bat violence, weight bar violence, golf club violence, car violence and etc. I've seen more knife violence than any of the others unless you include accidental, then cars would win. Of course that is excluding fists alone. If just talking about murders it would be(based on my personal experience) knives 1st and then guns. quote:Where did you get that gem? Total bullsh!t. The middle part might be true if strictly speaking of wild animal predator attacks. At least with large cats (based solely on stories I've read) the victim doesn't realize the attack until it physically happens. quote:I would agree(not based on personal experience)that killing another person is often emotionally traumatic. It should be. When being robbed you don't know what the outcome will be. I'm not fond of the idea of trusting my life to some a-hole who thinks it's reasonable to threaten or hurt me to get my property. I've personally seen too many instances where the robber unnecessarily harmed or killed the victim. quote:Yes there are and all have their place but so does lethal force. I recommend using any that are appropriate to the situation. Unfortunately some that might be of practical use in Hawaii are illegal in Hawaii. Dogs certainly have their place. quote:Your opinion, not mine. Dig deeper and the logic is there. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - jackson - 05-08-2012 Oink, I hope you learn to love Florida RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - dwedeking - 05-08-2012 Gun registration is on the rise in Hawaii - http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/147841095.html?id=147841095 as it is everywhere in the US (Rugers is at capacity for orders and not taking anymore this year). Whether you choose to possess a means of defense for your home and what form that defense takes is your choice. I prefer having a gun in the house for security. It's not bravado and not something that comes out in conversation, it's a tool, just like a Skilsaw or a drill. An insurance package just like the bag of tools in the back of my vehicle because there are a lot of places on this island (or on the mainland where I learned the habits) that are a long distance from any assistance. You have to be able to independently take care of yourself, relying on someone else to handle your problems is just irresponsible and childish. http://www.wedekingphotography.com RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - oink - 05-08-2012 I do love Florida. It's just that I can no longer stand the summer heat and hurricanes plus I kinda like the variety of elevations in Hawaii. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. RE: Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I. - Guest - 05-08-2012 I am surprised that nobody has talked about the historic significance of guns on these islands.... The guns put to rest hundreds of years of brutal fighting and bloodshed, it would not have been possible without them. I do have a sharks tooth club that I would prefer not to use, but I guess if I need to give up my ***** enhancement tools.... “Setting a good example is a far better way to spread ideals than through force of arms.” -Ron Paul |
