All of those airlines, and many others, are also petitioning the FAA to allow them to use their passenger aircraft as cargo aircraft, some of them have already started flights. I don't know if they will be serving any cities in Hawaii.

Have fun swimming to the mainland.

But Obie, couldn't "they" just start a Hawaii-Mainland Super-Super-Super Ferry? Maybe if the Super-Super-Super Ferry agrees to transport toilet paper and rice as part of their terms of agreement, so there's no protests?

I don't believe they need any permission from the FAA.

Keeping it movin’: Inaugural cargo flight to China showcases the Delta Spirit

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Delta Cargo has committed to keeping supply chains moving with the launch of a charter operation. On Monday, Delta announced the restart of regularly scheduled cargo-only A350 operations between U.S.-China to provide healthcare workers with the materials needed to do their jobs.

The inaugural flight between Detroit and Shanghai on March 31 was flown by Delta pilots Captain Tom Foertsch, Captain Darrel Baker, First Officer Roger Crawford and First Officer Richard Mize.

Our new national Heroes? OMG Obie, that's so cool!

Maybe they can do a stop over in Hilo so we can shower them with our aloha!

"National heroes" is your exaggeration, "hokuili", no-one else mentioned that. I'm glad that some airlines are finding ways to bring in needed medical supplies. What else do you suggest they do?

RE: Furlough Friday coming back - Guest - 04-18-2020

Hey, remember those "astronomy heroes", weren't they an exaggeration, "TomK" or maybe I missed something? You want to enlighten us?

While you're at it maybe you'd like to explain how this babysitting stuff works? Do you and Obie have separate shifts? Or maybe it's a tag team sort of deal? I had no idea you had taken Obie on. You should have made an announcement.

"I don't believe they need any permission from the FAA."

That is true if they are only placing the cargo in the belly of the aircraft, but if they want to use the passenger deck the airline has to demonstrate that they have adequate measures in place to calculate weight and balance of the cargo and the ability to secure it so it doesn't shift in flight. Some of the airlines are placing the cargo in seats, using the seatbelts, and covering all with cargo nets. Others are removing the seats and using other methods to secure the cargo.

Here is a graphic video of what happens to an aircraft when the cargo isn't properly secured: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fpxm0D46iQ

Getting back on topic, the quavering governor has pushed back his plans for cutting state personnel costs into June, still without saying exactly what those may be. Here's a link to the rather skimpy story on HNN:

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2020/04/18/hsta-state-informs-union-leaders-delay-possible-pay-cuts/

Whether it's furloughs or outright pay cuts, it is unrealistic to think that the state can take a revenue hit of the magnitude that's coming without some state employees feeling some pain. The states can't magically print money in a pinch, but who knows, maybe Trump and the congress will turn into a fairy godmother and send money to the states. That's been lacking so far in the rescue packages, but it does get mentioned now and then.

Also back on topic (although the plane crash may be an apt comparison), communication between state Senators and the Governor's office appears to be increasingly fractious. Unclear if the state government can pull together to sort things out, or if everything is just in a holding pattern while waiting to see if the Feds are going to airdrop in a bailout package before it's too late.

I believe that's exactly the point. Taxpayers need real information so they can make a decision. Government workers don't care because they have guaranteed employment.

No problem, though, we can just vote them all out in the next election, right?
