The big difference/irony is that Galileo was put down by the monied establishment, and TMT is being stopped by the opposite end--albeit with the non-action by the establishment/power letting it happen by default.

Another difference is that Galileo was in trouble for his ideas, not his telescopes. TMT is in trouble for being the 14th telescope.

Tangentially, I watched most of the Jan. 5 Part 2 testimony of Dr. Coleman. Such a sad state of affairs. Coleman was so gracious and kept his sense of humor...in the face of nearly pure idiocy at times. I suspect I wouldn't have had his patience and would have at least imagined the scene below. I leave it to PunaWebbers to figure our who the pompous celibates are in this analogy...

Something interesting happened at the end of court yesterday. The January 10, 2016 (Part 2) is up on http://naleo.tv/VOD/ and at the close of court 234:00 Ms Case, Mr. Ing and Fergerstrom protest using the word "pueo" for Perpetuating Unique Educational Opportunities because that is a sacred bird and aumakua. Lincoln Ashida (from PUEO) and the court agreed to bend to the will of the petitioners. However the group of native Hawaiians didn't like being the idea of not being able to use their own sacred terms.

The January 11, 2016 (Part 1) is up on http://naleo.tv/VOD/ It begins with Keahi Warfield at 6:30 who gives a passionate explanation as to why he objects to the court refusing to use the name pueo for his organization.

Anyone else here remember that skit?

I'd be surprised if most don't remember it, but here's a comic interlude, because I think we all need one:

Which issues in Ms Townsend's testimony did you find disagreeable?

I found this a fascinating exchange between two very sharp but opposed minds:

Go to the January 12th, part 1 video. It starts at the 152:30 mark.

The astronomy's subdivision atop Mauna Kea is now the astronomy capital of the world and the TMT project would only be expanding this subdivision of telescopes. jmo

Interesting short video of the TMT's site visit here. The red balloons height in the video shows just how massive this TMT telescope would actually be.

I am concerned that The Tmt project may block views of Maui or portions of the sky from some areas of the summit region. The TMT project being built on the northern plateau may also replace needed or sought after feelings of solitude, peace, and calmness with large noisy air conditioners and tourism related traffic. I am really disgusted that native Hawaiians and the once endangered flightless Wekiu bug are being pushed away from their current home of Mauna Kea and Hawaii so that astronomers can continue to use Mauna Kea's precious resources in search of new planets, patents, lights, fame and fortune. jmo

The TMT won't block views of Maui, there is no evidence anyone went out onto the northern plateau to get some solitude, the Wekiu bug is currently flourishing, I don't anyone who has claimed the summit is their home and astronomers tend not to go after patents, lights, fame or fortune. They become astronomers to study and research astronomy.

The moon and sun currently set over the mountain.. another telescope might make them set somewhere else.

The money currently sets on the mountain. Another protest might make it set somewhere else.

The moon and sun currently set over the mountain.. another telescope might make them set somewhere else.

Would that be caused by the overwhelming gigantic-ness of the TMT which blocks the sun & moon's normal descent as they set, or because the enormous PGV electricity consuming TMT air conditioners blow the sun & moon off course?
