The Polynesians who used the stars for navigation also used starlight that was decades to several centuries old. She doesn't seem to have a problem with that.

Michael Lee who purports to be a "star priest" made a daytime appearance at the hearing. At one point he started to explain his crazy idea that if the TMT was built, the electromagnetic field of the earth would be disturbed, leading to the end of all life on earth.
The earth would become like Mars. I didn't hear all of his testimony that day, but Andrew has a good writeup on his blog.

Wow. After three decades in the field, I'm used to seeing crazy ideas about astronomy, but this is definitely in the top 10 that I've seen.

The 11 pages of testimony really don't say anything other than to point out a bunch of sites outside the TMT zone and say these areas aren't mitigated.
I believe he testified on Jan. 23, but I haven't watched it.

On the other hand that is the garden variety kind of crazy that the vast majority of society will automatically identify as such. If you have to deal with crazy it is good in a way that it shows itself so clearly.

It is disturbing to see that Fergerstrom and the other TMT opponents have so little native instinct for self preservation left that they feel no shame being associated with such a kook.
I wonder how often one of their kids, off at school on the mainland and out of the weird cultural incubator in which this stuff thrives, suddenly has an epiphany about their parents' views?

From one angle. Unfortunately, one man's crazy is another man's champion. I doubt his supporters will ask him to recite the names of all 3000 stars he claims to know. Or which branch of the military intends to operate the TMT, and to what purpose? Or how one building (the TMT) out of billions of other buildings on the planet will destroy the earth's magnetic field, leading to destruction of all life here?
Finally, if the wrath of Pele will destroy the TMT when built, what's the point of the protests and voicing objections at the hearing? If Pele intends to take matters into her own hands for the benefit of the Protectors, why not let her handle the situation?

If you read Lee's written testimony, you can see that his English skills are at the grade school level.
E.g.
"Where Lono Makua would make love with Keakahulilani the female organ (the Earth's
shadow) found on the night of Akua the 14 day old moon in the heavens to produce the ejaculate of rain on the land to heal the land to bring the increase of the
opportunity of abundance to the land and the sea through this life giving ejaculate of fresh water."
"I was taught the broad stream the Woman was the subsurface stream flow from the top of the mountain to the shoreline estuaries and beyond to the kilo malolo the deep sea."
Tim Lui-Kwan questioned the "star priest" regarding some alleged burial sites along a road.
The priest claimed that there are underground caves and he has identified subsurface burials.
"There are two caves like the nostrils of your nose that is on the TMT site and is picked up as it goes down because water comes through that. "
Tim: "But we don't have a map here showing those nostrils or otherwise showing these caves?"
Lee: "Yes you do; right over here it takes it up to the reason why is because we could not get a hold of the EIS..."
From this snippet you can see Lee has poor verbal command of English and disjointed thought processes.
Stay tuned for next week's episode, when someone will claim that the TMT site should not be developed because it is a secret alien landing base essential for intergalactic space commerce...

Galileo - skills in the English language are not part of the contested case hearing. That's taking things a little too far.
