Mosquito Control Ideas - PauHana - 11-19-2015 I attended the Keaau Dengue meeting, put on by Dept of Health and Civil Defense. I asked what insecticides to spray for mosquitoes. They suggested I call a professional exterminator. This is interesting because I just called six pest control companies and non of them spray for mosquitoes. ORKIN lists them in their ad, but did not answer the phone. I asked if they had involved Dept of Ag since they regulate pesticides and deal with lots of insects and their control. They have not. WOW! Their focus was on repellents for individual citizens. So I asked what Dept of Health is spraying. The Dept of health is spraying Aguastar with the active ingredient Bifenthrin. CORRECTION they are spraying Aqua-Reslin ( Active(s) - Piperonyl butoxide + Permethrin) (They said individuals cannot buy this.) Aqua star is also listed for mosquitoes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bifenthrin Wikipedia Bifenthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide used primarily against the red imported fire ant by influencing its nervous system. It has a high toxicity to aquatic organisms. You can buy generic Bifenthrin at Farm Supply in Hilo. (Talstar is another brand name for it) It is not terribly expensive, and a little goes a long way. It also kills LFA and centipedes. If you are reluctant to spray synthetic chemicals I found this product. I purchased this from Amazon: Mosquito Barrier 2001 Liquid Spray Repellent, 1-Quart for $20.09. It is simply a very strong variety of garlic oil. It will kill mosquitoes it contacts and repels the rest. I sprayed under the eves yesterday where it won't quickly wash off. It has a very strong garlic smell for about 30 minutes. Too early to tell the results. Personal repellents DOH commented you should not use DEET over 30% on your skin. The stronger formulations are for cloths and netting etc. Off Deep Woods Contains 25% Deet. Greggor Ilagan was giving away mosquito repellent wrist bands at the Keaau Dengue meeting. Evergreen Research "SuperBand" Insect Repelling Wrist Band. Active Ingredients: Geraniol Oil - 15%, Lemongrass Oil - 5%, Citronella Oil - 2% It says it last up to 200 hours, or about as week. They have a pleasant smell, but rather strong. I put it on my ankle so the smell isn't so strong. A man who cleans water tanks spoke up at the meeting, pointing out that a tank cover laying in the water is like having a thousand tires in your yard. He said he sees them black with wigglers. Now I see tanks like that all over the place. Some common sense please. A woman came to the meeting and while asking her question said she has been tested for Dengue!! For heavens sake if you suspect you have it don't go where you can spread it to lots of people. Please share your experiences of what works and what does not. RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 11-19-2015 A woman came to the meeting and while asking her question said she has been tested for Dengue!! Best to avoid crowds where mosquitoes are present. One dengue infected person (known or unknown) may be bit multiple times by multiple mosquitoes, which then fan out through the crowd to infect many others. Who then go home and transmit the virus to family and neighbors. Back when the coqui frogs arrived on the island, one of the first areas to gain a large population in our area was the Keaau Transfer Station. People from coqui infested areas brought the frogs in with their trash, or hitchhiking on their car, and other people picked them up as they drove through and took them home. Avoid the Ground Zeros. RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - shockwave rider - 11-19-2015 quote: A cheap and easy way to keep your catchment cover out of the water is to float one of those big exercise balls in your tank. It will hold the cover out of the water and they are tough enough to stay intact for long periods of time when a beach ball would just degrade and then deflate. I worry about the catchment tanks at all the empty houses in Puna, between repos, vacation rentals and part time homes we have a lot of untended properties. Does anyone think that the property managers for vacation rentals are policing their properties for mosquito breeding sites when they can breed in something as small as a fallen palm frond? RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - lavarat - 11-19-2015 Other large breeding receptacles are rain gutters. I was renting a house in HPP which had a one-inch layer of muck. Even after cleaning, one leaf was enough to clog up the downspout The weak point was the narrow downspout and the screws which protruded inside and caught the leaves. I finally removed the end caps to keep them a little cleaner. RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - Jeffhale - 11-19-2015 Coincidently, I was looking up estrogen substitutes recently, specifically mentioned in a documentary; Lavender Oil.. Yet surprising it's on the top of the lists for mosquito repellents and after bite aide for 1,000's of years. Perhaps the Egyptians were on to something. I found this one on Amazon (prime shipping) Incline Fit Anti Burst Exercise Stability Ball with Pump, Black by Incline Fit 75 cm $10.99 Free Shipping for Prime Members http://www.amazon.com/Incline-Fit-Burst-Exercise-Stability/dp/B01198W92S/ref=sr_1_26?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1447968554&sr=1-26&keywords=exercise+ball lavarat: "Other large breeding receptacles are rain gutters. RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - sistersue - 11-19-2015 I wonder if baby mosquitoes carry dengue if their mother mosquito has the virus? I sprayed my property with Triazanon with a garden hose and hose sprayer and I haven't seen a mosquito since. Sometimes I feel like I have a bite but never see a mosquito. I know that Hawaiian "no-see-ums" are tiny mosquitoes that you usually can't see. RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - PauHana - 11-19-2015 Lavender oil: Wholesale Direct From The Manufacturer http://www.bulkapothecary.com/essential-oils/lavender-oil/ $46.58 for 16 oz (Lavender Essential Oil I didn't price shipping) RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - Punatic007 - 11-19-2015 http://www.ebay.com/itm/281804610809?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I just ordered this for inside the house. Thanks for the tip about lavender, think I'll play around with different oils. These diffusers come in all shapes and sizes. Some with USB. RE: Mosquito Control Ideas - Carey - 11-19-2015 Sister sue, the dengue virus is carried in the blood that the female mosquito taps from an infected person (and this infected person must be in the stage of high fever for the infection to spread)... the mosquitos are just carriers (vectors) for the vectors, they do not actually "get" the virus, so they would not pass this on to their offspring. Once a female mosquito has dengue infectious blood, she will transmit the dengue virus to every human she bites, so the main goals in stopping the spread of dengue are to eliminate the potential of mosquito bites to infectious (high fever) dengue patients & eliminating the potential of vector mosquitos biting non-infected humans... Wearing repellants, minimizing mosquito reproduction and being VERY observant of your condition (and if there is any chance YOU have a fever, be very careful of your mosquito contact!) totally eliminating the mosquito from our environment is now not a very possible thing (even drainpipes in your house, unless you flush them or treat them regularly, can have mosquitos..we now regularly put oil soap in all of our less used drains), but limiting YOUR exposure is possible... I did field work with an mainland environmental firm that dealt with mosquito reduction... the best sprays for knocking out adult mosquitos are ultra fine mist sprays delivered after dusk (earlier can mess up the beneficial insects...) bTI is the most effective larvicide for large scale treatment (bear in mind that most bTI treatments, and most other larvicide treatments, can float away in high rain events like this week!) |
