I attended the Keaau Dengue meeting, put on by Dept of Health and Civil Defense.
I asked what insecticides to spray for mosquitoes.
They suggested I call a professional exterminator.
This is interesting because I just called six pest control companies and non of them spray for mosquitoes. ORKIN lists them in their ad, but did not answer the phone.
I asked if they had involved Dept of Ag since they regulate pesticides and deal with lots of insects and their control. They have not. WOW!
Their focus was on repellents for individual citizens. So I asked what Dept of Health is spraying.
The Dept of health is spraying Aguastar with the active ingredient Bifenthrin.
CORRECTION they are spraying Aqua-Reslin ( Active(s) - Piperonyl butoxide + Permethrin) (They said individuals cannot buy this.)
Aqua star is also listed for mosquitoes

Wikipedia
Bifenthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide used primarily against the red imported fire ant by influencing its nervous system. It has a high toxicity to aquatic organisms.
You can buy generic Bifenthrin at Farm Supply in Hilo. (Talstar is another brand name for it)
It is not terribly expensive, and a little goes a long way. It also kills LFA and centipedes.
If you are reluctant to spray synthetic chemicals I found this product.
I purchased this from Amazon: Mosquito Barrier 2001 Liquid Spray Repellent, 1-Quart for $20.09. It is simply a very strong variety of garlic oil. It will kill mosquitoes it contacts and repels the rest. I sprayed under the eves yesterday where it won't quickly wash off. It has a very strong garlic smell for about 30 minutes.
Too early to tell the results.
Personal repellents
DOH commented you should not use DEET over 30% on your skin. The stronger formulations are for cloths and netting etc.
Off Deep Woods Contains 25% Deet.
Greggor Ilagan was giving away mosquito repellent wrist bands at the Keaau Dengue meeting.
Evergreen Research "SuperBand" Insect Repelling Wrist Band.
Active Ingredients: Geraniol Oil - 15%, Lemongrass Oil - 5%, Citronella Oil - 2%
It says it last up to 200 hours, or about as week. They have a pleasant smell, but rather strong. I put it on my ankle so the smell isn't so strong.
A man who cleans water tanks spoke up at the meeting, pointing out that a tank cover laying in the water is like having a thousand tires in your yard. He said he sees them black with wigglers.
Now I see tanks like that all over the place.
Some common sense please.
A woman came to the meeting and while asking her question said she has been tested for Dengue!!
For heavens sake if you suspect you have it don't go where you can spread it to lots of people.
Please share your experiences of what works and what does not.
