In Todays Tribune it mentions that the Panhandling has moved from Hilo to Pahoa, and The Hawaii County Council is considering expanding its ban islandwide...
...The pending bill, introduced by Puna makai Councilwoman Emily Naeole in response to a request by the Pahoa Main Street organization
I find it very ironic that Naeole would be the one to bring this bill forward, considering she herself sits in front of Cash and Carry selling leis.

Hmmm. Is selling something that you (and/or your family members) made (for generations) for people's pleasure (locals and tourists alike) the same as just plain standing on the street accosting passersby for cash?

No... it's not even close to being the same.
I just find it ironic that she would be the one to push the panhandling bill.
It's a bill that hurts the lowest income levels and I'm suprised by her decision to sponsor it, considering her stance on some of the other issues.

I do not think it is the same. Selling crafts is much different than panhandling.
A minor correction in the article though. This bill was not at the request of Pahoa Mainstreet Assoc. I am on that BoD and the subject of panhandling has never been discussed.
The bill is apparently at the request of one or more business owners in Pahoa Village, some of whom are members of Mainstreet Pahoa Assoc. so there is a little confusion in the press on this.

I do not like the idea of anyone having to "beg" for anything - BUT - when was the last time you actually came across someone actually "begging" - that humble, heart wrenching, need for something - food (will eat anything), clothing (will wear anything), shelter (will sleep under any safe roof), tolerance, a kind embrace!
Panhandling is TOTALLY different. It is to "ACCOST" someone.

Jobs have nothing to do with panhandling.
Homelessness has nothing to do with panhandling.
Lack of food, clothing has nothing to do with panhandling.
Lack of tolerance and a kind embrace MIGHT have something to do with panhandling.
Panhandling is the easiest, laziest way for someone to secure MONEY - not for the things they NEED but the things they WANT!
It is the acceptance of panhandling that encourages it.

READ the ordinance, not just some news clips, they are talking about aggressive panhandling! Once you READ the actual ordinance you'll see exactly what this is about.
