UHH Senior Walczuk to debut documentary on Rat Lungworm Disease
Caution in Paradise, a documentary debut about rat lungworm disease (link to trailer follows below)
The Performing Arts Department at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo announces the showing of Caution in Paradise, a thirty minute documentary debut by Maria Karin Walczuk, illustrating how rat lungworm disease shapes the Big Island and beyond. The viewing will be followed by a question and answer session on May 7th at 6:00 p.m., at the Campus Center Room 301.
Rat lungworm disease is a parasitic form of meningitis most frequently consumed through raw produce -- it furthermore exists as an under-reported and under-researched issue in the Hawaiian islands. Following three individuals who suffer from this disease, audiences will understand more about its severity and our vulnerability as a community for the first time in film media.
Walczuk is an upcoming Performing Arts graduate at her home campus, the University of Hawai`i at Hilo. She has studied abroad but remains inspired by the diversity, depth, and culture of Hawai`i. With her documentary film about rat lungworm disease, Caution in Paradise, Walczuk hopes to solidify the beginning of her sharing meaningful stories through the arts.
