Wait, what year is it? When are we?

Many of my recent readings have mirrored discussions here in an odd way. While most likely just a coincidence, other possible explanations may include a purposeful converging of timelines ala Lost, or perhaps a Groundhog's Day effect with events repeating until a lesson is learned. Here are some tidbits of interest.

Sherman, set the Wayback machine to 1983:

Police Chief G. Paul revealed organized crime from Japan (yes, the yakuza) was investing in property on the Big Island. While most likely related to drug trafficking, Paul noted that organized crime was active in unions both in Japan and the US. Police Commissioner Cassidy was later dismissed for being "disruptive" after highlighting several problems including over 7000 hours of unpaid overtime at the police department. Dept of Health's monitoring of vog is inadequate and long term effects of SO2 on public health are unknown said Paul Aki, State Health Dept chief pollutant investigator. Results gathered are "too late really" and only detect SO2 and suspended particles; other substances are possibly present. (HTH 1-28-83)

Local community at odds with planned geothermal development after voicing concerns regarding impacts to culture, health, and the environment as BLNR indicates approval for plans for drilling in Kahauale'a near Volcano. Within days of the announcement, the 1983-present rift eruption begins and inundates several of the proposed well sites. Opponents to geothermal plans have called Madame Pele the "final witness." (HTH 1-4-83, 1-9-83)

HGP-A well site (near PGV/Leilani) is seen as having an effective abatement system for H2S and hopefully new technologies will continued to be applied. Standards for noise, and air and water quality must be developed. Health surveys are planned for the future. (HTH Viewpoint Mar 83)

Following months tracking a slowly advancing flow, a community waits as lava pools less than 1/2mi from development. While the flow itself poses one danger, residents of Royal Gardens, including Jack Thompson, are advised to evacuate because of smoke and fume hazards. Days later the first structures are lost; the last structure is claimed 29 years later, almost to the day, when the lava flow returns to Jack Thompson's house (HTH 3-2,3,4-83, 3-4-2012)

Much credit to Frankie Stapleton whose byline appears on many of these articles.

Anyone else know of another year that resonates with today? The Wayback controls are yours.
